Coventry suffered heartbreak last season after being relegated from the Championship, so they’ll be looking to bounce straight back up at the first attempt. It won’t be easy though. Remember how long it took Leeds to get back up to that level.
Players like Stephen Elliot, John Fleck, Adam Barton and Reece Brown have all come in to offset the loss of Richard Keogh and Freddy Eastwood. City have raked in £1million thanks to the sale of the talented Gael Bigirimana to
Newcastle United, so they should be in good shape. Kilbane’s experience will be key to their hopes for this season.
We got the views of Joe Litchfield (@Joe_Litchfield) as Coventry prepare for what they
hope will be their first and only season in League 1.
How did last season measure up, compared to your expectations?
Well I have to be honest, it was always going to be a relegation battle considering the lack of funding Andy Thorn received and losing some very key players, that were not replaced. The bookies had us tipped for the drop, and that is what we got. We just had too much of a bad start and despite some form finally arriving in the new year, it was too little too late.
What do you think of your club’s summer transfer activity, are there
more arrivals/exits on the horizon?
Almost all of our new signings this summer have been on frees, with a couple of loans being Reece Brown from Manchester United and Callum Ball from Derby. We have only paid the one fee this summer and that was for Adam Barton from PNE. Thorn has been able to tempt Kevin Kilbane to the Ricoh on a free which must be our top signing this year. I do not expect any more exits from the Ricoh as we have already lost key players such as Richard Keogh and Martin Cranie, which were big losses to our defence.
What would be a dream new season for you?
Promotion. We have not had a promotion since the 1960′s, not in my lifetime anyway, so to experience one would be incredible.
What would be your worst nightmare?
A bottom half finish, the quicker we get back in to the Championship, the better!
Who will be your most important player/s this season?
Kevin Kilbane, our captain will be a key player this year leading our youngsters out every week. Gary McSheffrey and Cody McDonald will hopefully rack up some goals and Jordan larke at the back is always improving, I am expecting big things from him.
Any players you would happily see the back of?
David Bell has been very poor for us the last couple of seasons, he needs to step it up which I think he could well do in League 1, as it may be his level.
Do you have the best manager for the job?
That is a difficult one, I personally like him but he has to win over a few of our fans who think he just isn’t experienced enough. I think he will produce the goods this year
Opposition players that you respect?
Billy Sharp, may not be in our league anymore, but I will always respect him.
Opposition players that you despise?
Everyone who isn’t a Coventry player!
Best away fans/ground in your league?
Well as this is a new experience for us City fans in League 1, I can’t really answer that. We are all looking forward to the League 1 tour, we have already took nearly 2,000 down to Yeovil for our season opener! I would like to think we have the best stadium in the league however.
Which teams do you really want to beat this season?
Everyone, we dont really have a rival in this league.
Finally, where do you honestly think you will finish?
Realistically, fifth. But i would love top two.
