Ajax star Kasper Dolberg is Europe's most exciting football prospect

Wednesday 13th September 2017
Kasper Dolberg was one of Ajax's most important players last season. And while the 19-year-old does not have the coverage other young stars such as Kylian Mbappe or Ousmane Dembele have, there is no question the Danish forward is one of the top forward prospects in Europe at the moment.

Football fans do not have to follow the European leagues by heart to realise that the top leagues are filled with interesting young players. Established stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Marco Asensio, Gabriel Jesus and Ousmane Dembele tend to grab headlines with their play on a week-to-week basis. But if we dig a little bit deeper, we can find other young players filled with potential. And today we are going to focus on a 19-year-old striker who currently plays for Ajax.

If you thought about Kasper Dolberg, then you guessed correctly. The Dane came out of nowhere to become one of Ajax's best players last season. And while he has not started the current season on the right note since he is yet to score in eight matches, the hype surrounding him is real. If we analyse his numbers since the start of the 2016-17 season, there is enough reason to believe he is one of the brightest prospects in Europe at the moment.

And before you think he is better than Dembele, Gabriel Jesus or Mbappe, he isn't. The main difference is that those three players are already thriving in some of the best leagues in the world. Hence, the word "prospect" doesn't really fit with them anymore. Dolberg's case is different, since the Eredivisie can be considered a second-tier league in Europe, and he hasn't been tested in a top-flight environment. At least not yet.

A Star In The Making

As mentioned above, Dolberg came out of nowhere to become one of Europe's most prolific strikers. He netted 23 goals and added eight assists in 48 matches across all competitions last season. Six of those goals came during Ajax's UEFA Europa League run last year that saw the Dutch giants made it to the final against Manchester United.

Unfortunately, he did not start the current season on the same note. He is yet to score in the first eight games of the campaign and has not looked as good as he did in the last term. Maybe that is because Ajax got weaker during the transfer window. But it could also be attributed to a scoring drought. Every single player in the world can go through one of those. And would anyone say something about a 19-year-old not scoring in eight games? Most players his age are not even in senior teams yet. But Dolberg is different. He is a special talent, and everyone around him knows that.

Time will tell where he will end up playing. He is not going to stay at Ajax forever and has already been linked with a move to a bigger team. Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United have enquired about him. And all signs indicate the sky is the limit for him.

Dolberg just needs to keep playing like he has done it so far. But the talent is there, and if he can put it together, he should become one of the best forwards in the world sooner than later.
