League One: Sheffield United Vs Scunthorpe United preview

Friday 17th February 2017
League one is starting to take shape as we head into the final third of the season. Coventry City is still, unfortunately chasing at the foot of the table with Sheffield United leading the line for the top spot.

Sheffield United have had a very pleasant season under the management of Chris Wilder. They have the best attack in the league with 58 goals and 20 of them have come from prolific striker Billy Sharp. This will be his second consecutive season of scoring 20+ goals in a season with last season's tally at 21.

Ironically, between 2005 and 2007 Sharp played for Scunthorpe United. In the two seasons he played for them he scored an astounding 53 league goals. He has had two previous spells at Sheffield United but since joining back in 2015 Sharp has tallied 41 league goals in 75 appearances showing no signs of slowing down.

Anything Sheffield United can do Scunthorpe can do just as well this season. They've relied on 25-year-old left-midfielder Josh Morris bagging 18 goals so far in this campaign. This is certainly Morris' best season yet and who knows how many goals he could get by the end of the season. Many big clubs have been rumoured to be looking at the Englishman.

Scunthorpe was top of the table for a majority of the season but have slipped up recently giving the top spot away to Sheffield United. Scunthorpe haven't won in three games with their most recent fixture resulting in a 0-0 draw with Walsall. They will be hoping to put things back in place at Bramall lane this weekend.

Sheffield United's season didn't get off to a great start. After the first four games, they only picked up one point. Despite the poor start, they picked the pace back up and won five of their next seven games. Ever since then, it has been uphill for "The Blades".

The two sides last met back in September. The result ended up 2-2 and there was a sending off for Chris Basham. It was an entertaining encounter with both teams scoring in the final ten minutes of the game. Hopefully, we can expect more of the same in the upcoming fixture at Bramall Lane.

Scunthorpe may use their standard 4-4-2 formation. A formation they are most familiar with and it has proved successful. Sheffield United will probably opt for a 3-5-2 flat. Again, a formation that has been key to a great season so far.

Sheffield United sit on 64 points with 32 games played. Scunthorpe are on 59 points but have played 31 and creeping up behind are Bolton on 57 points but have only played 30 games. This weekend is a key stage for League One with possibly three teams in the running for the title still.

Bolton will be travelling to Bradford this weekend in another key game as Bradford are also sitting in the playoff positions. Also, the week after, Bolton will be playing against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. It is certainly very interesting to look at from a neutral point of view in League One.

What do you think the result will be? Will the Blades increase the space between first and second or will Scunthorpe close the gap?
