Match Report: Aston Villa 1-0 Fulham (Fulham Fan's Perspective)

Sunday 11th March 2012
Fulham came into the match with Aston Villa full of confidence after winning three in a row. However, it was the home side that played like they were on a winning streak especially in the first half. Fulham were much better in the second half, but the home team grabbed the victory in stoppage time on a goal by Andreas Weimann. Fulham really had a kick in the teeth in their 1-0 loss to Aston Villa yesterday at Villa Park.

As mentioned, The home team were very strong in the first half, and controlled the pace of the match. Aston Villa had 61% of possession in the first half, and really stifled Fulham from putting on any consistent attack.

However, Fulham's defence held strong, and withstood the pressure they were under in the first half. Fulham actually had an opportunity in stoppage time to take the lead. Off of a free kick just outside of the box , Danny Murphy sent a pass to Andy Johnson, and his shot just went wide. The half ended with a 0-0 score.

The second half saw a change as Murphy came off, and was replaced by Mahamadou Diarra. The tempo for Fulham was very different, and they started to control the match.

Fulham had a couple of scoring chances in the second half. In the 69th minute, Damien Duff had a shot that just touched the post. In the 77th minute, John Arne Riise had a shot that just went over the net.

The response in the second half from Fulham was encouraging, and it looked like they would earn a point in this match. However, Fulham fans have seen the club give up late goals on more than a few occasions this season.

Well, unfortunately Fulham gave up the winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time. Gary Gardner sent a rocket of a shot that Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer blocked, but it rebounded right to Weimann, who eventually scored. Aston Villa would take all 3 points at the very end of this match by winning 1-0 at Villa Park.

This was a tough way to lose for Fulham, but you have to give credit to the home team for coming out strong, and finding a way to win. For Fulham, I feel confident they will bounce back as they meet Swansea City at home next Saturday at Craven Cottage.
