Premier League, play-offs and losing your head

May 15, 2012 at 10:34 am in Birmingham City, England, Football League Championship by Gianni Sawyer · Leave a Comment »

This is a funny old time of year for any team in the Championship. Depending on how you’ve fared, you could be singing, crying, or tearing your hair out. Any team from the Championship can be sorted into one of these categories:

1) Promoted – this is the holy grail of this league, you’re going to be playing Premier League football next season.

2) Qualified for Play-offs – this means that you have put in a great effort to win the league  [read more →]

Match Report: Birmingham 2-0 Reading (Reading Fan’s Perspective)

Apr 29, 2012 at 7:18 pm in Birmingham City, Football League Championship, Reading by Mark Lawrence · 1 Comment »

Reading went into the game with Birmingham knowing that they were champions of the Championship, and their fans were in full voice throughout the inflatables made an appearance, as is now traditional for the last away game of the season. Reading were looking to sign off with a win, but Birmingham had more of a reason to get all three points to claim fourth place, and it showed.

Adam Le Fondre, Jay Tabb, on-loan Matthew Connelly and Simon Church all came  [read more →]

Match Report: Brighton 1-1 Birmingham (Brighton Fan’s Perspective)

The final game of what has been an epic season at the AMEX saw Brighton take on Birmingham. A win for the Blues would guarantee a play-off spot, whilst the Seagulls were playing for pride, and a top ten finish.

Neither side were at their best but Brighton are now without a win in seven matches whilst Birmingham are unbeaten in eight.

The Seagulls started the first half the brightest, Will Buckley nearly opened the scoring shortly after 10 minutes, latching onto  [read more →]

Hail Our Heroes No Matter The Outcome

Just eleven months ago I feared the worst for our club. I’m usually a positive person, but I couldn’t see how relegation, a mass clear out of players and a manager leaving to go to the Villa wouldn’t have a very adverse affect on the club.

But this is Birmingham City FC. We may not have a glittering trophy lit history, but we never give up. And we always believe. We have to.

My Dad always said to me that the most  [read more →]

Match Report: Birmingham City 2- 2 Bristol City (Bristol City fan’s perspective)

Apr 17, 2012 at 8:22 pm in Birmingham City, Bristol City, Football League Championship by Thomas Langridge · Leave a Comment »

Bristol City continued their timely unbeaten run with a draw at promotion chasing Birmingham. Goals from Stephen Pearson and Jon Stead had given City a 2-0 lead at St Andrews, but Marlon King scored a deflected goal on the stroke of  half time before Nikola Zigic equalised 30 minutes from the end.

City Boss Derek McInnes made 4 changes from the team that beat Coventry on Saturday. With Louis Carey, Kalifa Cisse, Martyn Woolford and Chris Wood all earning recalls.

Match Report: West Ham 3-3 Birmingham City (West Ham Fan’s Perspective)

Yet another draw at home, and two points lost in the battle for an already unlikely automatic promotion spot.

The players gave their all, with the fight and will to give everything, which was available for all to see in that second half. But ultimately the re-occurring problem of conceding goals when on top this season has struck once again costing the Hammers the win.

The Irons started well, enjoying good possession and playing well. But it was the Birmingham outfit who took  [read more →]

Who Are You And What Have You Done With Birmingham City?

Apr 7, 2012 at 1:25 am in Birmingham City by Sam Jordan-Turner · 2 Comments »

Under the management of Steve Bruce or Alex Mcleish, Birmingham City fans didn’t know the meaning of the words ‘positive’ or ‘attacking’. Now, sitting in the 3rd place in the Championship, two away wins on the spin and a healthy goal difference of +23, Chris Hughton has turned this relelgated team around. Marlon King is our highest goal scorer since Gary Mcsheffrey in 2005/06. This is made even more impressive by the fact that we had an extensive FA Cup run  [read more →]

Match Report: Birmingham City 1-1 Cardiff City

Birmingham City moved back into a play-off place after a closely contested 1-1 draw against Cardiff City at St. Andrew’s on Sunday.

All the significant action came in the second half where Cardiff’s Mark Hudson cancelled out Erik Huseklepp’s opener to take a share of the points; this after Marlon King had a penalty saved by David Marshall.

Before the game, there was a minute’s applause for Fabrice Muamba, who is recovering in hospital after  [read more →]

Match Report: Leicester City 3-1 Birmingham City (Leicester City Fan’s Perspective)

Leicester City bounced back  in a hard fought encounter from a goal down to win 3-1 against a visiting Birmingham City team, who continued their fall from grace and fell further away from the Championship Play-Off positions.

The game started off slowly, with a pick & mix of half-hearted chances for both sides; Neil Danns had the best of these efforts from just inside the penalty box, but failing to bother Boaz Myhill’s goalmouth for the home side within the opening  [read more →]

Match Report: FA Cup 5th Round: Birmingham 0 – 2 Chelsea (A Birmingham Fan’s Perspective)

Mar 7, 2012 at 10:14 pm in Birmingham City, Chelsea, FA Cup by Charlotte Parker · 1 Comment »

A weakened Birmingham City side did their manager and fans proud in the FA Cup Fifth Round, despite losing to Chelsea.

As expected, the furore in the build up to the match had been about the managerial situation at Chelsea, and the Chelsea players perhaps had a point to prove as they triumphed 2-0 to see them in to the quarter finals.

Both sides didn’t field their strongest teams, with Birmingham manager Chris Hughton being forced to make seven changes to his  [read more →]

Birmingham City 0-2 Chelsea (Chelsea Fan’s Perspective)

at 7:50 pm in Birmingham City, Chelsea, England, FA Cup by Martin Li · Leave a Comment »

Chelsea started life after AVB with a comfortable, professional win in Roberto Di Matteo’s first match in interim charge. Any potential confusion under new management was concealed, and Chelsea managed to book a last-eight tie against Leicester City, in the hope to win the competition for the fourth time in six years. Juan Mata opened the scoring with a stab home after a mêlée concurred, and Raul Meireles, one of AVB’s summer signings, struck home a second with a beautiful hit. Juan Mata could even  [read more →]

Plenty Of Life Left In Scotland’s Cheeky Boy

I always fancied myself as a great judge of footballer, even at the age of ten - so I didn’t let the fact that my dad and sister’s opinion on the newest Motherwell youngster differed affect my opinion. It was Boxing Day in 2000 and the only positive from a 3-0 defeat to Dundee on a foggy afternoon was the cameo from 17-year-old James McFadden, who seemed like confidence personified, with a “rat tail” growing from his hair. The cockiness of the  [read more →]

Obsessed With The Mess That Is The West Midlands.

Feb 29, 2012 at 11:09 pm in Aston Villa, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers by Vikram · Leave a Comment »

What a mess three of the four main West Midlands teams are in. Aston Villa are closer to the relegation zone than the European places; Wolves sacked their manager, only to appoint his assistant; while Birmingham City have been in a dire financial state, got relegated last season and had to sell nearly all of their starting eleven from last season.

Meanwhile, their local rivals West Bromwich Albion have gone from strength to strength and could be looking at a top half finish, never mind guaranteed Premiership  [read more →]

The Magic Of The ‘Other’ Cup

Following another weekend of FA Cup fixtures, the magic of ‘the cup’ has once again been enthused upon by pundits. Every football fan knows that the FA Cup is ‘the cup’ – the one that you wait your whole life in the hope that one day you’ll see your team lift.

But what about the lesser mentioned Carling Cup. Regarded as worthless by some, a waste of time by others, does it still have a place in the sporting calendar?

Match Report: Chelsea 1-1 Birmingham City (Birmingham Fan’s Perspective)

Birmingham extended their unbeaten run to 14 games with a 1-1 draw against Premier League opposition Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup 5th Round.

The talk in the media will no doubt be all about the job security of Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas. But let’s not forget that there are two sides to every story, and although Chelsea might not have given the best performance, give credit to the plucky Birmingham side that fought hard to earn a well  [read more →]

Match Report: Chelsea 1-1 Birmingham City (Chelsea Fan’s Perspective)

Feb 19, 2012 at 12:58 pm in Birmingham City, Chelsea, FA Cup by Arthur Ozols · Leave a Comment »

Another day gone by, another lacklustre result for Andre Villas-Boas’ men. Many fans predicted an emphatic win for Chelsea, which is wholly understandable, considering the club’s stature when compared to that of Birmingham City. The result? Another poor performance and another draw.

Chelsea started off with a decent passing game, trying to thread passes through to the penalty area, albeit with little success. Torres didn’t help; in fact, he pranced around the front line with a face of gloom and doom.  [read more →]

Match Report: Chelsea 1-1 Birmingham City (Chelsea Fan’s Perspective)

Pressure continued to mount on Andre Villas-Boas after a drab draw in the FA Cup against Championship side Birmingham City. The under-fire Chelsea manager saw his side frequently fail to break down a well-organised Birmingham side, meaning a replay at St Andrews was needed, to be played on 6th March. David Murphy opened the scoring for the Midlands side, and when Ramires was felled in the box two minutes later, it was an early chance to claw back the deficit, only  [read more →]

Chris Hughton – Keep Right On

Feb 9, 2012 at 11:41 pm in Birmingham City, Football League Championship by Lucy · 1 Comment »

Chris Hughton took over a Blues side sight set for failure and heading for a dismal season. With a chairman under arrest on suspicion for money laundering, the shares to Birmingham’s parent company were frozen, and the club having to perform a fire sale of players in order to raise funds. All after a roller coaster season of winning the Carling Cup on February 27th 2011 and being relegated on May 22nd 2011.

After Mcleish took the deadly trip across the  [read more →]

Blues’ Block 11 Controversy

The Tilton Road End – the home of the twelth man at St Andrews. Or at least it used to be.

Going back to the 1970′s, Trevor Francis, Bob Hatton and Bob Latchford were Blues’ legendary front three who captured the hearts of the Birmingham City faithful. Their names echoed from the stands and St Andrews truly was a fortress.

Now snapping back to 2012, following relegation to the Npower Championship Birmingham’s gates have dropped by an average of 8,000. The loyal supporters  [read more →]

Birmingham City 1 – 0 Portsmouth (Birmingham Fan’s Perspective)

Birmingham overcame Portsmouth in a 1-0 victory at St. Andrews on Tuesday night to move third in the Coca Cola Championship.

It was a keenly awaited fixture, particularly for the hosts as it was another game in hand over their fellow promotion hopefuls after their Europa Cup exploits earlier this season.

Birmingham, who went into this match unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions, started brightly despite being without in-form striker Nikola Zigic due to injury. However, although they dominate early possession,  [read more →]
