Tuesday 31st December 2019
Every year has its triumphs and failures, especially for goalkeepers.
Every year has its triumphs and failures, especially for goalkeepers.

On the eleventh day of football,
UEFA gave to me
Eleven keepers keeping
Ten lads-a-leaping,
Nine ladies playing,
Eight managers managing,
Seven sides-a-sinking,
Six games amazing,
Five Golden Goals!
Four calls blown,
Three French clubs,
Two title races and
Liverpool and Man City

Welcome to this year's edition of the 12 Days of Football on It's Round and It's White. Over the holiday fixtures, our writers will look back on the 2019 calendar year and ahead to the season's end in a series of 12 articles covering different issues and leagues in European football. Today, Warren Smith pays tribute to football's last line of defence. Enjoy.

The general consensus is that it requires a certain amount of mental instability to be a goalkeeper. The ultimate anti-hero, they exist to deny rather than score goals and, like a proper villain, live by their own rules in using their hands to do so. How many brilliant strikes have been turned away by a gloved hand over the years, leaving strikers holding their heads in disbelief? Here are eleven keepers who made themselves big in 2019.

Yokohama F•Marinos supporter. Seen it all in the J.League, relegation fights and being crowned champions. Play five-a-side, pretty good too. Once scored an overhead kick.
