12 Days of Football 2019/20: Six games amazing
Welcome to this year's edition of the 12 Days of Football on It's Round and It's White. Over the holiday fixtures, our writers will look back on the 2019 calendar year and ahead to the season's end in a series of 12 articles covering different issues and leagues in European football. Today, Joshua Adoyi revels in six of the most stunning results from the past year. Enjoy.
The year 2019 witnessed some glorious moments in the footballing world. Who would have thought English teams who had struggled to make a continental impact for so long would stage a clean sweep of the European club finals? Or that, two seasons removed from a Ligue 1 title, Monaco would survive relegation by a meagre two points? Who? No one. Who saw Lionel Messi putting Cristiano Ronaldo in his rearview by winning his sixth Ballon d'Or? Okay, pretty much everyone but you get the point.
Sometimes a game's significance is tied to the stakes for the two sides involved. Other times, the result doesn't even matter. Players just deliver a spectacle. And spectacle is why we all watch the beautiful game. Without further ado, let's recall six spectacular matches from the past calendar year.
