3 Goalkeepers Liverpool Could Buy This Summer

Saturday 31st March 2018

Liverpool have long been criticised for defensive frailties and done little to improve. Gone are the days of Pepe Reina, Sammy Hyypia, and Jamie Carragher. Welcome to the Simon Mignolet, Dejan Lovren, Alberto Moreno era.

The Reds have focused on their attack, investing in a multitude of exciting young forwards while leaving the rearguard to fend for itself. Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers, and Jurgen Klopp have all wanted the club to a) play attractive football and b) to that strength to effectively out-score opponents.

Heavy metal football, as the German calls it, is a blast to watch. But season after season the Reds are weak at the back, shipping more goals than any other team in the top six. This season Arsenal have conceded more, but ranking second-worst is hardly an improvement. An attitude adjustment is needed.

Jurgen Klopp has made a few positive defensive signings since taking over in 2015. Generally, they have come good. Joel Matip, Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson have begun to improve the team.

It's a step in the right direction. There remains a long way to go.

Liverpool have few clean sheets to show this season despite their defence looking better. In large part, that is down to the goalkeeping. Klopp debates whether to play Simon Mignolet or Loris Karius. He has changed his mind a few times this season regarding his number one. It should be clear at this point neither is good enough.

So who should be in Liverpool's sights?

Jan Oblak

The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets than anyone in the top five leagues, save for Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Barcelona's German is on the same impressive tally of 18.

Having failed to keep either David de Gea or Thibaut Courtois, Atleti has written a release clause set at £88.2 million into their latest gem's contract. Oblak may not be Liverpool's first option. Nor may he fancy the move.

Regardless, the Slovenian would strengthen their side. He is just about the best keeper they could realistically hope to sign. Again, however, every indication is he is happy at the Wanda Metropolitano. So, maybe someone closer to home?

Kasper Schmeichel

Maybe not the ‘big name’ signing that will thrill the Kop, Schmeichel is nonetheless among the Premier League's best netminders. He has proven his worth every season at Leicester City. The Foxes won the title in 2016 but have struggled to return to that level. Could a bigger club tempt him away from the King Power?

The second-generation keeper has only managed seven clean sheets in the league this season but compare his defensive cover to Oblak's and becomes an outstanding number.

Alisson Becker

Still not sold? The Brazilian shot-stopper's performance has been so good at AS Roma that Tite prefers him to Manchester City’s Ederson heading into this summer's World Cup. Alisson has kept 13 clean sheets in 29 Serie A games this season. Ironically, only Pepe Reina, now at Napoli, has more. Just 25, his entire career is before him. Could the Selecao be the perfect blend of talent and affordability Liverpool seek?
