3 players Rangers should sign for next season
Reformed Scottish Premier League giants Rangers are preparing for a big summer transfer window. Still unable to restore some equity to the Old Firm rivalry, they'll seek to bolster their squad to compete on level terms with Celtic. The blue side of Glasgow has not won the league since 2011, and have struggled through financial difficulties. The Bears have clawed their way back near the top of the SPL table and desperately want to complete the journey. Here are three players they should sign.
James McArthur, Crystal Palace
The Scottish international's contract at Selhurst Park expires in June. He's available. He is also a Rangers fan, and 30. He might be amenable to a dream return home. If he could be had, McArthur would be a brilliant addition to the Ibrox crew.
The Glaswegian began his career in Scotland with Hamilton Academical, playing 192 games for the Accies. He moved to England in 2010, snapped up by Wigan Athletic for £500,000. The Latics were in the Premier League when he joined. He helped them win the 2013 FA Cup but couldn't prevent their relegation. He signed with Crystal Palace for an undisclosed fee and has been there ever since.
Palace may still offer him a new deal, but they were quick to release Joe Ledley last season. If McArthur needs a new home, it would be worth a phone call to see whether his boyhood club might turn his head. Surely, he would be welcomed by the fans.
Steven Naismith, Norwich City
The former Everton star is on loan at Scottish Premier League side Hearts, from Norwich City. The rumour mill had him keen on joining Rangers in January. They should move for him in the summer when he returns to Norwich. He is out of favour at Carrow Road under Daniel Farke. It would be a shrewd buy from Graeme Murty or his successor. Scottish football is a hard slog and Naismith would be a useful squad member to have. He would also be another option going forward.
Naismith has played for Rangers before. He was a hit during his time at Ibrox from 2007 to 2012. He scored 28 league goals in 98 appearances before leaving to join Everton. It would be nice to round those numbers up.
Allan McGregor, Hull City
Like Naismith, Allan McGregor has played for Rangers. Now he is Hull City's first choice goalkeeper in the Championship, where he has shown decent form. The 36-year-old's contract expires in June. He could be had on a free.
McGregor has proven he is still a top goalkeeper and would be another popular signing with Gers fans. He has 35 caps for Scotland, began his career with Rangers, and played 278 games in Light Blue. The Edinburgh native left in 2012 to join Turkish side Besiktas but was then signed by Hull City in 2014 for £1.5 million. He played for the Tigers in the 2014 FA Cup Final against Arsenal and also aided their promotion in 2016.
With his future at the KCom in doubt, Rangers should see if they can grab a Tiger by the tail.
