One For The Future - James Ward-Prowse

Monday 1st October 2012
This week the It's Round and It's White youth scout gives us the lowdown on James Ward-Prowse from Southampton.

The Facts:

Name: James Ward-Prowse

Age: 17

Nationality: English

Club: Southampton

Position: Centre Midfield

The Lowdown:

In the previous articles the young players discussed have come from European giants such as Ajax, Barcelona and Liverpool.

This time round the player in question is turning out for a club with a smaller reputation but with an academy that in recent years has flourished remarkably.

James Ward-Prowse is just 17 yet the central midfielder has featured 6 times in the Premier League this season for new boys Southampton.

Ward-Prowse started 4 of these games and has featured, and impressed, against Manchester City and Manchester United already.

The central midfielder is regarded for his control and passing ability and he has been described as a 'tidy player' in possession on the club's website.

Ward-Prowse is also not afraid to get a shot away and did so twice against Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal showing him to clearly be a man for the big stage.

He is not regarded as a frequent goal scoring midfielder having scored just once in 13 appearances for the Saints first team in all competitions.

He can grab a goal here and there though and at youth levels he had a good, if not outstanding, goal to game ratio.

When you look at his emergence it actually looks most promising when you see the players that have come through Southampton's academy in recent years and been trusted with the same responsibility at such a young age.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, Bale and Walcott are the prime examples of youngsters coming through and flourishing at St Mary's and Ward-Prowse looks set to follow in their footsteps.

He has had a promising start at Premier League level and if Adkins continues to back the youngster then his stock is sure to rise radically this season.

If he can grow to a level anywhere near that of the recent graduates then he may indeed be one to keep a big eye on for the future.
Alex Anderson
Alex started supporting Arsenal at a young age and witnessed many successful years as a boy, even having the pleasure of supporting 'The Invincibles.' On the other side of this, he has also witnessed the long, painful wait for a trophy and the hurt of seeing his idols leaving the club on a regular basis. His favourite people within football are: Wenger, Vieira, Bergkamp, Fabregas and of course Henry whose signed shirt he has hung up on his wall. Robin van Persie would have been on that list also but we all know the reason for his omission. Alex is currently in his second year at the Univeristy of Central Lancashire where he is studying Sports Journalism and he hopes to get a job within the industry on finishing his degree.
