4 free agents Championship clubs should sign in January
The January transfer window is open which means many Championship clubs will be looking for some new signings to bolster their squads. But for some clubs who do not have the financial capabilities of others in the second tier, they may be looking for some cheaper options. Many footballers still find themselves without a club and would be great signings for some. Here are 4 players who are currently free agents and would be a decent signing for a Championship club:
The 30 year-old was recently released by Championship strugglers Birmingham City after being told he was not part of Steve Cotterill's plans. He now finds himself looking for a new club in January. He will no doubt be a target for some sides as he is an experienced Championship winger. He is also an established Wales international. This is why Sunderland are the first side to be linked with him as he knows Chris Coleman well from when he managed Wales. Cotterill has played for a lot of clubs in his career such as Bristol City, Swansea City, Wigan Athletic, Sheffield United, Portsmouth, Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers and Birmingham City. Who will be next?
The 30-year-old has been affected by injuries over the past couple of seasons and was released by Nottingham Forest in the summer. He did score goals in the Championship in his prime and if kept fit he can be prolific at this level. Formerly of Leicester City and Hull City, Fryatt has scored 134 goals in his career to date. He would be a great free transfer signing for a side who are lacking goals such as Burton Albion or Bolton Wanderers. It is a shame that recently his career has been halted due to injuries but he has proven that he is a goal scorer at this level in the past.
The once capped for England defender has recently left Championship side QPR. He is a top quality centre-back at this level on his day and he needs a new permanent home. The former Spurs, Swansea City, Cardiff City, Liverpool and QPR defender is now vastly experienced and needs to be given a chance somewhere. He has been linked with Scottish giants Celtic recently but I think he needs to be signed by an English side for the sake of his career. Once tipped as once of the brightest young defenders in the country whilst at Spurs, it is a shame to see the way his career has panned out. He has been relegated twice from the Premier League with Cardiff and then QPR but I think that he will get another shot at the top flight in the future. He just needs to find a new club in the Championship for a start and hopefully he does during this transfer window.
The Cameroon international was released by Norwich City at the end of last season and is still without a club. He was set to sign for Birmingham City but a move fell through after Harry Redknapp was sacked. The former Spurs defender would be a decent acquisition for someone out there. However, his wage demands may be too high which could put off potential buyers because he will have had some clubs interested in him. I think for this reason that he will end up abroad somewhere.
