5 players that could replace Everton's Romelu Lukaku

Wednesday 29th March 2017
Romelu Lukaku has been Everton's star man since joining in 2014 for £28m, scoring 83 goals in 157 games for the Toffees, each season outscoring the last. Since then he has managed to net an impressive 20+ goals for 3 seasons in a row. At times it has seemed as though he has carried the team, and last season they were lucky to keep hold of him after he - to fans' annoyance - said he wanted to play for a 'big' club.

It now seems the Belgian has no intention of signing a new contract with the club. The Toffee's ambitions aren't moving as quickly as his own, with Champions League football being his main priority. He will likely be departing in the summer, and where he will go no-one quite knows yet. However, there'll be lots of clubs wanting to secure his services.

So who might Everton replace the 23-year-old with? Bearing in mind the Merseyside club made it known last summer that they would not sell the striker for less than £65m, they should certainly have the funds to bring in a top calibre striker, it's just whether or not the club can attract such a top talent when they're currently sitting in 7th place in the Premier League with Champions League football looking at least another year away.
Alexandre Lacazette  of Lyon could be one such player. How likely this is to happen will depend somewhat on what other offers the Frenchman receives, but he has previously entertained the idea of playing in the Premier League, though said he'd prefer to live in London. The Ligue Un striker has scored 83 goals in 110 appearances across all competitions in the last three seasons and has caught the attention of Arsenal, Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Having said this, he was close to making the switch to West Ham last season, so who knows?

Moussa Dembele . If you thought Brendan Rodgers' young talent scouting stopped when he left Liverpool, think again. The 20-year-old impressed at Fulham scoring 17 goals in his final season, and has upped his game since joining Celtic, netting a huge 32 times in 46 games.

Anthony Modeste is a more experienced player than the majority of strikers on this list. Everton would not have to wait for him to reach his peak, nor would they be gambling on young talent only to find they paid way over the odds. With 42 goals in 64 appearances for FC Koln, Modeste would make a great addition to the team, and would surely help soften the blow of losing Lukaku.

Javier Hernandez . The only striker in this list to be truly Premier League proven (Dembele made 2 appearances and Modeste made 9). Hernandez played for Manchester United for 6 years, until he made the switch to the Bundesliga in 2015. He has been in good form at Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 38 goals in 72 appearances for the club. If Everton could secure his signature they wouldn't have to worry about whether or not the striker could keep up with the English game.

Mauro Icardi is one of the brightest young talents in world football and already the captain and top scorer of Inter Milan (at age 24). Arsenal and Chelsea have shown significant interest in the Argentinean, though the Seria A side reportedly wanted £60.65m, which is a bit steep.
