Areas to improve for next season's Premier League title contenders

Thursday 26th May 2016
Next season's Premier League title race promises to be the most exciting we have ever witnessed. The success of Leicester City has given hope to every Premier League club that they too can exceed all expectations. Therefore predicting a winner for the title next season will be extremely difficult.

We take a look at the six Premier League clubs who have the most realistic chance of challenging for the Premier League crown next season. Each of these teams will be looking to add to their squads in the upcoming transfer window. So in what positions should each club be looking to strengthen?

Arsene Wenger has to sign some top players this summer. The arrival of Swiss international Granit Xhaka will improve Arsenal's options in central midfield. However, other areas of the pitch must also be addressed. The priority should be a world-class striker. An addition at centre-back is also a possibility.

Possible signings

Medhi Benatia - If Arsene Wenger does decide to improve his options at centre-back, Benatia would be a great choice. His style of play would suit Arsenal perfectly. If Benatia isn't guaranteed more game time next season with Bayern Munich, he could look for a move away from the Allianz Arena.

Alvaro Morata - The Juventus front man has been heavily linked with Arsenal over recent weeks. Having only featured as a bit-part player at Juventus this season, a move away is a possibility. But would Wenger be tempted to pay the huge transfer fee to secure his services?

Karim Benzema - The French striker is often touted as a possible signing for Arsenal. He would be ideal for the club, his composure in front of goal could take Arsenal to another level. Although it would take a big offer from Arsenal to tempt Real Madrid into selling.

Incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte will be looking to put his own stamp on the club. So expect a busy transfer window at Stamford Bridge. Although John Terry has signed a new one-year contract with the club, a new addition at centre-back is still required in order to provide decent competition at the back. Chelsea also need to add another central midfielder to their squad.

Possible signings

Leonardo Bonucci - A man who Conte knows well from his time at Juventus. Bonucci would be the ideal long-term replacement for Chelsea captain John Terry. Although Juventus will be reluctant to sell.

N'Golo Kante - Leicester City will be desperate to hold on to Kante. But if he does decide to leave, Chelsea is a possible destination. He would provide much-needed protection to the Chelsea defence. Kante is also a proven Premier League player.

Radja Nainggolan - The Belgian midfielder is also on Chelsea's radar after his impressive performances for Roma this season. His all-round game would improve the current Chelsea midfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side have continued to improve during his time at the club. Next season more additions are required if Liverpool are to have any chance of finishing top of the pile. The arrival of Joel Matip from Schalke is expected to tighten up the defence. German goalkeeper Loris Karius has also joined the club. While further additions are expected.

Possible signings

Niklas Sule - The young German centre-back has had an impressive season in the Bundesliga. He is the type of player Jurgen Klopp usually goes for, so don't be surprised to see him arrive at Anfield during the summer.

Mario Gotze - Signing the Bayern Munich playmaker would be a real coup for Liverpool. He has the ability to turn Liverpool into a real force in English football. Gotze has been heavily linked with the club, but a deal would be difficult to get over the line.

Theo Walcott - He rarely gets a start for Arsenal, so there is a chance he could switch clubs this summer. His pace would suit the way Liverpool play. Klopp is also rumoured to be a big admirer of Walcott. Could Liverpool tempt Walcott to switch to Merseyside?

Manchester City

There could be big changes to the playing squad at the Etihad this summer. Pep Guardiola will be determined to sign his own players for the club, players who will fit into his style of play. City will need a new centre-back, as the fitness of Vincent Kompany is a huge concern. Guardiola will also want to improve in other areas of the pitch.

Possible signings

Aymeric Laporte - The young French centre-back is already a star in La Liga. Guardiola could make a move for the Athletic Bilbao player. Laporte would be seen as the long-term successor to Kompany.

Ilkay Gundogan - Gundogan has been linked with a move to the Premier League for the past few seasons. He would be a good signing for City, his technical ability, and battling qualities would suit Guardiola's style.

Paul Pogba - During his time at Juventus, Pogba has established himself as one of the best midfield players in European football. Every Premier League club would jump at the chance to sign him. City have the money, so a deal is possible.

Manchester United

Jose Mourinho is expected to be announced as the next manager of Manchester United. If that is to happen, Mourinho will want to make some changes to the United squad for next season. The attacking positions will need strengthening, a new centre-back should also be targeted. Expect some big money signings at Old Trafford this summer.

Possible signings

John Stones - The Everton centre-back was close to joining Chelsea whilst Mourinho was the manager. So it's possible Mourinho will go for his man once again. Stones would fit seamlessly into the United team, partnering Chris Smalling at the back. Would a big money offer tempt Everton to sell?

Marco Reus - His pace, trickery, and goals would certainly have the fans at Old Trafford on the edge of their seats. Borussia Dortmund will be desperate to hold on to him. But if he is to leave Germany this summer, he is a player United should do everything in their power to sign.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - At 34, Ibrahimovic is still one of the very best strikers in Europe. His goal scoring record this season for Paris Saint-Germain was phenomenal. Having worked previously with Mourinho whilst at Inter Milan, the pair could rekindle their relationship in Manchester.

Tottenham Hotspur

After an impressive season, in which Spurs finished in third place, manager Mauricio Pochettino will want to improve his team for the next campaign. The addition of Champions League football also adds to the need for a larger squad. A striker has to be the priority, someone to lessen the burden on Harry Kane. A central midfielder could also arrive at the club.

Possible signings

Victor Wanyama - The powerful Southampton midfielder was the subject of a failed bid from Tottenham last year. Pochettino may try to get his man for a second time. Wanyama is proven in the Premier League, and would add depth to the Tottenham midfield.

Saido Berahino - Another player to be heavily linked with Tottenham last year. Berahino has failed to live up to expectations at West Brom this season. A move away from the club looks increasingly likely. Tottenham will be keeping a close eye on the situation.

Michy Batshuayi - A revelation in the French league this campaign. Batshuayi would fit the mold at Tottenham. He is young, talented, and knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. A big bid from Spurs could tempt Marseille into selling their star striker.
