Borussia Dortmund have shown intent with 8 new signings

Friday 26th August 2016
Borussia Dortmund have been busy this summer in the transfer window. The club has already made eight new signings in an attempt to end Bayern Munich's dominance in German football. We take a look at the new arrivals to the Westfalenstadion.

Dortmund finished in second position in the Bundesliga last season, ten points behind their biggest rivals Bayern. The clubs will renew their rivalry this season as they battle to be crowned German champions. Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel has brought in some exciting new players, which will add to the quality already at the club, and it could give his side an excellent chance to oust Bayern this campaign.

Dortmund's new recruits

Mario Gotze returns to Dortmund after three seasons playing for Bayern. The talented German international failed to reach his peak while in Munich, but his ability has never been in doubt. Gotze is a player for the footballing purists - he has a great first touch, superb ball control, and the vision to pick out a pass.

Gotze's back at his boyhood club, which should give him the chance to play more games, and the opportunity to regain his top form. Gotze was once regarded as a phenomenal talent, someone who could potentially become one of the world's best players in his position, and although his form has deserted him over recent seasons, he can finally begin to fulfil his potential with Dortmund.

Andre Schurrle is another member of Germany's Euro 2016 squad to sign for Dortmund this summer. Schurrle arrives at Dortmund after enjoying a successful season with fellow Bundesliga side Wolfsburg - he's expected to reproduce the form he showed last season while playing for Dortmund this campaign.

Schurrle doesn't possess the same level of technical ability as Gotze, but he has other qualities that make him a dangerous threat going forward. Schurrle will provide his new club with goals from wide areas, he's a good finisher in and around the penalty box, and he proved that last season by scoring nine goals in the Bundesliga. If Dortmund play to his strengths, Schurrle will thrive this season.
Ousmane Dembele joins Dortmund after making his breakthrough with Rennes last season in Ligue 1. Big things are expected of the talented 19-year-old, which is why Tuchel pounced to secure his services. Despite being inexperienced at the top-level, Dembele's shown a huge amount of potential since making his professional debut ten months ago - scoring 12 times in the French top division last campaign. Is Dembele ready to produce this season at Dortmund?

Raphael Guerreiro is on his way to becoming a world-class left-back; the Portuguese star arrives at Dortmund with a growing reputation in European football. Guerreiro played a big role in Portugal's recent triumph at Euro 2016, his impressive performances in the competition also earned him a place in the team of the tournament. The former Lorient defender is still only 22, so he has a huge future ahead of him at Dortmund.
Two players that have joined Dortmund to play more first-team football this season are Sebastian Rode and Marc Bartra . Rode's proven himself in German football over the last four seasons; the former Bayern player will provide energy to Dortmund's midfield. We could see the best from Rode this season as he looks to kick-start his career.

Bartra spent all of his career at Barcelona before his recent move to Dortmund. While he failed to establish himself in Barcelona's first team, he remained an important part of the squad, and he also earned ten caps for Spain during his time in Catalonia. Bartra will now look to fulfil his potential at Dortmund, which could lead to him becoming one of the top centre-backs in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund manager Tuchel recognises the importance of having talented youngsters in his squad, which is why he's signed 20-year-old Spaniard Mikel Merino and Turkish teenager Emre Mor . Merino is an experienced player for his age, having made 64 appearances for Osasuna in the Spanish second division. Mor is already a full international with Turkey, his impressive technical ability and quick feet could potentially make him a star in the Bundesliga.

Dortmund face a difficult task this season as they attempt to conquer their great rivals Bayern by finishing top of the Bundesliga. Tuchel's side has lost some key players this summer: Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. However, the club has brought in some top talent - spending a combined total of £94 million. If their new players gel with the stars already at the club, Dortmund stand a good chance of winning their first Bundesliga title in five seasons.
