Charly Musonda is wanted by Roma, but should he stay at Chelsea?

Thursday 12th January 2017
Chelsea's exciting attacking-midfielder Charly Musonda is wanted by Italian Serie A side Roma, who are reportedly pursuing him on loan with an option of buying him for £7 million, according to The Evening Standard.

The latter seems highly unlikely, however, manager Antonio Conte has declared that he is unsure whether he will keep the 20-year old at Chelsea or send him back out on loan, after returning from his current loan spell with La Liga side Real Betis.

Musonda has struggled to cement a place in the Betis side, only scoring one goal in 24 appearances and has been a bit of a mixed bag. But the player himself seems to want to stay with Chelsea, posting on his social media that he 'is happy here', alongside a shot of him training with his Chelsea teammates.

But is he good enough to break into Conte's Chelsea squad?

At still only a young age, he has superb potential and is a very creative, skilful and fast player who can certainly light up and change a game in an instant. He has been a regular top performer for his home Nation Belgium at Youth Level, recently making 12 appearances for the Under-21s. He has a strong following in Belgium as well as World Football tipping him to be a potential future superstar.

Musonda was only 15 when he was featuring in Anderlecht's Youth setup, attracting the Worlds biggest teams including Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United. But it was Chelsea who snapped him up in 2012 bringing his two brothers along whilst agreeing on compensation with Anderlecht.

Belgium as a Nation continues to develop and produce some of the world's best players with the likes of Eden Hazard and Kevin De Bruyne coming through similar Coaching programs at Youth Level, who are of course now both lighting up the Premier League with their respective Clubs. De Bruyne was mistakenly sold by Chelsea in my opinion, I hope that this is not the same mistake we will end up seeing with Musonda, who possesses similar flair as his fellow countryman and a huge bag of potential.

Musonda has had some superb performances in La Liga so far and there is no doubting his ability and potential. If any Coach can bring the best out of a player then it's Conte. This young Belgium would certainly not look out of place being part of this super quick counter-attacking Chelsea side.

He has the ability to beat players, make something out of nothing, hold onto the ball and be a real threat going forward. With the right mentoring, support and Coaching, he can provide real competition in that Chelsea team this season.

Although right now, I'm currently on the fence with Conte, and depending on whether Chelsea sign any other players this window, it could well be a good idea to keep Musonda within the ranks and give him some solid game time, see if he can make an impact from the bench to start with and move him on from there.
