Chelsea's Squad Review - Who Stays and Who Goes in Midfield

Sunday 8th July 2018

Antonio Conte’s first year at Chelsea was championed by him securing N’Golo Kante from then title holders, Leicester City. Along with Nemanja Matic, Kante formed the focal point of a controlling midfield that expanded and contracted Chelsea’s game.

However, former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho secured Matic for Manchester United. Despite his reluctance to sell, Conte was now stuck with the board’s decision. He chose to recruit from outside the Premier League at first, signing Tiemoue Bakayoko; before raiding Leicester City once more, this time for Danny Drinkwater.

But neither could help Conte regain the same midfield dominance that he enjoyed in the 2016/17 season. In this part, we dissect Chelsea midfielder’s 2017/18 season, before continuing to assess the state of transfers at the Stamford Bridge.
