Ciro Immobile continues a fine goal scoring season

Monday 8th January 2018

Italian football has always been of a high standard but there are some stand-out players in Serie A from time to time. One player making his mark is Ciro Immobile. The Italian forward has bagged 20 goals so far for Lazio this season.

The 27-year-old added four to his current tally against S.P.A.L in Lazio's most recent fixture. The game ended 5-2 to I Biancocelesti which resulted in them leapfrogging AS Roma into fourth place.

Born in Torre Annunziata, Immobile joined Sorrento at a young age and eventually signed with Juventus as a youth prospect. From 2009 onwards he would only make three appearances. His career started to pick up interest as he was moving quite frequently between clubs. He was loaned out to clubs such as Siena, Grosseto and Pescara. For Pescara, he managed 28 goals in 37 games during the 2011-12 season.

After that, the striker would sign permanently for Genoa playing 33 matches but only scoring five times.

The following season he would sign for a new club. This time with Torino for the 2013-14 campaign. That season he bagged 22 goals in 33 games. When that season had finished he was finding work elsewhere. This time in Germany playing with Borussia Dortmund. Only scoring three goals he was then let out on loan to Sevilla. Eventually signing on a permanent deal with the Spanish side, Immobile didn't even make one appearance. This resulted in him being loaned back to his former club, Torino. Bagging five goals in fourteen games interested Lazio in his capture for the 2016-17 season.

Since joining the Italian club, Immobile has become a fan favourite with his goal scoring form. The Italian has 43 goals in 54 league games and looks to be enjoying his football more than ever.

From the 19 league appearances in Serie A this campaign, Ciro Immobile has scored in 11 of them. In his first 12 matches, the six-foot-one striker bagged 15 goals including a hat-trick against AC Milan and braces against Genoa, Verona, Juventus and Cagliari. But in total there has been 26 goals in 24 games from the talented forward in all competitions this season.

Last season the Lazio frontman finished with 23 league goals and 26 goals in all competitions. Already on 20 league goals and 26 in all competitions, it looks like he is willing to beat his previous record. Although it does help playing in a team like Lazio in Serie A. Manager Simone Inzaghi has shown his trust in making sure Immobile is at his best throughout the current season. Other players that have been linking well within the squad include Lucas Leiva, Marco Parolo, Luis Alberto, Nani, Senad Lulic, Felipe Caicedo and Milinkovic-Savic are just to name a few.

Currently undefeated in four matches, Lazio are looking to push on for the higher spots and with a player like Ciro Immobile firing on all cylinders, there is certainly no doubt they can be a threat to other teams who surround them in Serie A. Their next fixture is at home to Chievo at the Stadio Olimpico. With a 70,000 seated stadium, there will definitely be an atmosphere among Lazio fans with the current form they are trending. Chievo are currently 13th and haven't won in six games. Out of those six, they have only picked up two points so they are really struggling right now.

With Chievo's poor form and Lazio's great form, you would think Ciro Immobile could get a few more in their next fixture and hopefully continue what is possibly the best time of his career so far.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
