Cristian Pavon could be a great signing for Arsenal
Arsenal is set to lose Alexis Sanchez during the January transfer window. In fact the Chilean winger could leave the club in the coming days. Manager Arsene Wenger has said a decision on the talented winger "will be made in the next 48 hours." If reports Sanchez already has an agreement to join Manchester United are true, the Gunners must start planning ahead. Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also said to be making a decision whether to be part of the deal. If United's midfield Armenian decides to move to London his time in the Premier League doesn't inspire confidence he can replace Sanchez.
There has been talk regarding a potential move for Bordeaux wunderkind Malcom. The 20-year-old is said to be in London. He could complete a switch in the coming days. Thomas Lemar has also been a target. AS Monaco is not willing to let another star player go. Not on the cheap at least. One player Arsenal should consider is Cristian Pavon.
If the name doesn't ring a bell you must remember football is also played outside Europe. Pavon is a skilled winger who currently wears the number seven shirt for Boca Juniors in the Argentina SuperLiga. The 21-year-old has been a rumoured transfer target for several European sides. He is set to move to Europe sooner than later and has all the qualities to fit in perfectly at Arsenal. Like Sanchez, Pavon can operate all over the attacking third, although his blistering pace makes him far better suited to play on either wing. He has the talent to take defenders on one-v-one. There is no question he would be an interesting addition to an Arsenal side that lacks a speedster in the final third.
Pavon is young, hasn't been abroad, and would need English lessons. Once settled, though, he could be expected to begin schooling opposing defenders.
Like Lemar, Pavon won't be cheap. Boca Juniors insists it will only allow the winger to leave when his €35 million buyout clause is met. They have yet to receive an offer from Arsenal or any European club for that matter.
The Cordoba native recently signed a new deal with Los Xeneizes through June 2022. The team expects him to remain with the squad until the 2018 Copa Libertadores concludes. Assuming Boca makes it that far, which isn't too risky a bet, the final is in November. It's possible Arsenal could purchase the player then leave him on loan for the year at La bombonera while it kicks Mkhitaryan's tires. Such an arrangement would aid Pavon's continued development by keeping him in first-team football for another season.
Pavon is no Malcom. Not yet. The fact he has never played in Europe will put some fans in doubt. It's one thing to thrive in Argentina, another completely to do it in England. That said, there was a time Malcom had not played in Europe either. Or Alexis Sanchez. Or Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano. Arsene Wenger is known to favour young talent rather than buy proven but well-used merchandise.
Christian Pavon is the real deal. His talent is there for everyone to see. He has the potential to be a stellar player. When the talent is there the chance must be taken. It would be wise for Arsenal to sign him now before the price goes through the roof.
