Cristiano Ronaldo snubs mega move to China

Friday 30th December 2016
Jorge Mendes, the agent of Cristiano Ronaldo, has come out today and revealed that his client turned down the opportunity to earn over $105m/year from an unnamed Chinese Super League club. It's reported that the club made the offer whilst Ronaldo was negotiating his new contract with Real Madrid back in November.
Talking to Sky Italia in a sit-down interview, Mendes revealed the CSL club were willing to pay a transfer fee of up to $316m for the star forward. The fee would have tripled the previous transfer record of $100m for Paul Pogba. Last year, Mendes audaciously claimed that Real Madrid would only ever sell Ronaldo for a fee in excess of £1billion.

From a financial point of view, the 31-year old would have been set for life with the deal. It would have seen him Ronaldo earn approximately $2.12m a week, completely blowing his current $340,000 a week salary out the park. It's also rumoured that his main sponsor, Nike, were pushing for the deal behind the scenes, as it would have made Ronaldo the face of their proposed East Asia advertising campaign.
Ronaldo who recently won the Club World Championships has had a career-defining year. The forward won the European Championships, the Champions League and the Ballon d'Or award in the space of six months. In the midst of all this success, he's still managed to notch up 55 goals in 57 appearances, simply astonishing. He's been the heart & soul of Portugal and Real Madrid. Funnily enough, his club and international teammate Pepe is also said to be wanted by several CSL clubs.

Ronaldo signed a new contract extension with Real Madrid and is set to stay in the capital until 2021. It's clear that he's happy at the Bernabeu and still sees himself being at the top of football for several years to come. Mendes reassured us that "although they can buy any player in the world, money isn't everything in football, Madrid is his life."
With big money deals happening all over the place, it's a breath of fresh air to hear that the World's best footballer has said no to the riches of China. Carlos Tevez recently made the switch to China to play for Shanghai Shenhua, where he'll reportedly be earning over £600,000 a week, making him the World's highest paid player. The week before that, Oscar signed for Shanghai SIPG for a transfer fee of £60m.

In the last two years alone, we've seen quality players like Hulk, Ramires, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Jackson Martinez, Alex Teixeira, Robinho, Graziano Pelle, Gervinho, Asamoah Gyan, Papisse Cisse & Demba Ba all cross the ocean to play in China. It's not only players that are joining the revolution, it's coaches too. World renowned managers like Manuel Pellegrini, Marcello Lippi and Sven Goran-Eriksen are currently heading several clubs in the CSL.
The signing of Ronaldo really could have turned the tide in favour of the Chinese, at the moment they're like those noisy neighbours who won't go away but aren't really a threat, yet. In the coming seasons I'm sure we'll see more and more talented players fly off to the greener pastures of China, but as long as we can keep the World's elite happy in Europe, there's nothing to worry about, for now.
