The missing goals of Cristiano Ronaldo

Saturday 18th November 2017

Whenever we hear the name Cristiano Ronaldo the first thing that would probably come to mind is goals. Becoming a renowned world-class superstar throughout his illustrious career the Portuguese forward has set the bar for top-notch football. But recently this season there has been a lack of goals. What seems to be the problem?

With seven appearances in La Liga so far this campaign Cristiano Ronaldo has only bagged one goal. It is highly unusual to see the four-time Ballon d'Or winner only scoring once in the league so far. History shows he has finishing ability and even people who don't follow football know that. His worst season for scoring in the Spanish league was last season. He still scored 25 goals. The thing with Cristiano is that he could have a poor performance and still get on the scoreboard. So to only net one goal in seven games really does say something.

At this stage, the 32-year-old has only one assist in the league also. Something we would have thought he will have contributed more to this campaign. This isn't the Ronaldo we are all used to as he usually gets on the score sheet. He is known to set up teammates in needed situations but predominantly we know him for taking chances on by himself. Because of the quality he has, the Portuguese captain does not lack confidence one bit.

Obviously, we are only partway through the season and there will be no doubt Cristiano Ronaldo will grab more goals along the way as Real Madrid aim to reclaim the top spot. Madrid are currently third and have already lost two league games out of eleven played. Los Blancos sit eight points behind league-leading arch rivals, Barcelona.

Despite the lack of goals in La Liga, Ronaldo has actually been in form within other competitions. Six goals in four games during this seasons Champions League has proved he still has quality that Real Madrid are hoping he can succumb to within La Liga. Even without Ronaldo's single league goal this season, Real Madrid will have still scored 21 goals in 11 games.

Other players at Madrid seem to be stepping up to the plate in adding goals towards results. Team members including Marco Asensio, Gareth Bale, Casemiro, Dani Ceballos and Isco total 14 goals so far. It isn't just forwards that have been key for Real Madrid. Most of their goals have actually come from midfield. This is probably a sign of how Zinedine Zidane plays his side, producing goals from the middle of the pitch.

Even though Ronaldo is lacking goals in La Liga this season we can all be sure he will find his form soon enough. We are talking about a player who was inducted into the FIFA FIFPro World XI for the 11th time. Since joining Real Madrid back in 2009 Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 414 goals in 407 appearances. Breaking records left, right and centre there is no reason why the most decorated player in football cannot find his form again this season. He has quality teammates and plenty of chances to get back on track.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
