Dutch Eredivisie Round-Up

Monday 13th February 2012
The Dutch Eredivisie headed into its 21st week of competition on the back of a controversial week for one of it's most famous teams. The court case surrounding struggling Ajax Amsterdam was finally settled as it was ruled that Louis Van Gaal could not be appointed as Chief Executive. The verdict has led to the resignation of all of the members who intended to hand Van Gaal the job, effectively leaving club legend Johan Cruyff in charge of the former European giants.

FC Twente - Heracles Almelo: 2-3

Local rivals Heracles Almelo handed FC Twente to it's first home defeat this season. The match in Enschede ended in a 2-3 win for the visitors from Almelo. It was a game of few chances until the 33th minute when Everton Ramos da Silva netted the opener from a Samuel Armenteros cross.

The quality of play improved in the second half, but it took till the 73rd minute for Twente to level through striker Luuk de Jong. Both sides then pushed for victory but it was Heracles who took control with two quick goals, Darl Douglas re-established the visitors' lead before Everton punished Twente's shaky defence as he scored his second. De Jong grabbed  his second in injury time but it was too little too late.

AZ - Excelsior 2-0

AZ  had little trouble seeing off low-flying Excelsior but it took almost an hour for them to secure victory. Midfielder Maarten Martens scored twice in the 58th and 60th minute to give AZ their 14th win of the season.

Roda JC - NEC Nijmegen 1-0

Roda's Syrian striker Sanharib Malki sealed a 1-0 win for Roda JC with his 15th goal of the season. NEC came close to snatching a point draw in the dying seconds of the match but "supersub" Melvin Platje missed a huge chance to take something from the contest.

VVV-Venlo - FC Groningen 2-0

Relegation candidates VVV-Venlo won three much needed points against FC Groningen. After 15 minutes Yannick Wildschut deservedly put Venlo 1-0 up and only 15 minutes later Nigerian striker Uche Nwofor doubled the score. Groningen fought to try and get back into the game but were unable to do so.

NAC Breda - Ajax 0-2

Ajax won their first match of 2012 thanks to two identical goals in the second half. Ajax had the better of the game and enjoyed 70% of the possession. However, the Breda defence stood firm until the 68th minute when Russian striker Dmitry Bulykin rounded the keeper and slotted home. Santi Kolk almost equalised after a miscommunication between Ajax-goalie Kenneth Vermeer and defender Daley Blind but captain Jan Vertonghen made a vital goal line clearance to deny the home side. Just two minutes later Ajax countered and wrapped up the win when Miralem Sulejmani sent Nicolas Lodeiro, who made no mistake and powered home past Jelle ten Rouwelaar.

FC Utrecht - ADO Den Haag 1-1

FC Utrecht sprung a surprise last week as they defeated Ajax for the fourth time in consecutive seasons, but they couldn't carry that momentum into the next game as they were held by ADO. Utrecht took the lead in the 30th minute when Frank Demouge went around the goalkeeper after a header by Alexander Gerndt, but just 10 minutes later ADO hero Lex Immers capitalised on a Utrecht mistake to earn a draw for his side.

PSV - De Graafschap 4-1

PSV had little difficulty in sweeping past bottom side De Graafschap as they eased to a 4-1 win. Belgian striker Dries Mertens gave PSV the lead on 8 minutes, Mertens dived appallingly inside the box but was awarded the penalty which he duly converted himself. Goals from Ola Toivonen, Tim Matavz and Jermaine Lens enabled PSV to take a 4-0 lead into half time. PSV relaxed in the second half and allowed Gil Vermouth to score a consolation for the visitors.

RKC Waalwijk - SC Heerenveen 0-1

SC Heerenveen won their fifth match of 2012 as a first half goal by Rajiv van la Parra helped them earn a 1-0 at RKC. The goal came with RKC down to 10 men after Evander Sno was sent off for a horrible tackle on midfielder Viktor Elm. The win moves Heerenveen into 3rd place in the league.

Feyenoord - Vitesse 3-1

Feyenoord's decision to loan Manchester City's John Guidetti continues to bear fruit as the striker scored another hat-rick (Guidetti scored a hat-rick in a win over Ajax two weeks ago). Guidetti hit home his first from a corner before winning a penalty, which he comfortably dispatched to double the lead. Vitesse pulled things back to 2-1 thanks to a penalty from former Feyenoord player Nicky Hofs but Guidetti completed his treble on 83 minutes to keep PSV top of Eredivisie table.
