Dutch Eredivisie Round-Up: Week 22

Monday 20th February 2012
The 22nd round of the Dutch Eredivisie was one with ups and downs, sometimes really short after eachother. It started as a good week for Dutch football. Ajax may have lost their first Europa League tie with Manchestester United (0-2) but AZ Alkmaar (1-0 against Anderlecht), PSV (1-2 against Trabzonspor) and FC Twente (0-1 against Steaua Bucharest) won their matches and have a good chance of progressing to the next round.

SC Heerenveen - NAC Breda 1-0

The suprise of this season SC Heerenveen beat NAC Breda only 1-0. NAC is the only team in the Dutch league who didn't manage to get a win in 2012. Heerenveen was by far the best team on the pitch but it wasn't until the 34th minute when midfielder Filip Djuricic scored the only goal of the match. In the second half Heerenveen could have increased their margin to four or five but their strikers were not sharp enough

Feyenoord - RKC Waalwijk 1-1

After scoring three hattricks in home matches in a row John Guidetti was again the main character in this match. The first half was moderate but the last 15 minutes of the match won't be easily forgotten. In the 77th minute of the match Guidetti opened the score from the spot and celebrated this by removing his shirt to show everyone his new tattoo. Guidetti probably forgot that he already received a yellow card and got his second one and will miss PSV away next week. After the red card Feyenoord's level dropped very fast and in the 88th minute it was RKC striker Robert Braber headed home for a late equalizer.

ADO Den Haag - Excelsior 1-1

In the first half Excelsior played a pathetic game but was lucky ADO's strikers didn't had their day. Especially John Verhoek and Ali Boussaboun could have easily scored. But in the 35th minute Excelsior's Edwin de Graaf helped ADO by shooting the ball beautifully behind his own goalkeeper. But in the second half everything changed. From the first possibility Excelsior got in the match Roland Alberg scored the equalizer. In the last minute Excelsior should have got a penalty kick but the referee didn't see the handball of ADO defender Aleksandar Radosavljevic.

De Graafschap - VVV-Venlo 1-4

VVV-Venlo recorded their first away win since November 2010. After eighteen away losses in a row they beat fellow relegation candidates De Graafschap with 1-4. It was a match with two different halves. De Graafschap had the first half completely in hand which led to a 1-0 lead after 13 minutes scored by Rydell Poepon.

In the second half it was VVV-Venlo over and over again. In the 50th minute they got their equalizer when Danny Holla scored. Only two minutes after that they grabbed the lead when Maya Yoshida headed in a corner at the near post. An own goal in the 65th minute by Ted van der Pavert sealed the win for VVV which was set to 1-4 in the 81st minute by Steven Berghuis. Following this loss De Graafschap sacked manager Andries Ulderink.

Heracles Almelo - Roda JC 2-1

Heracles didn't manage to impress their fans in the first half. Roda grabbed the lead in the 40th minute by who else than "The Tank of Damascus" Sanharib Malki. But in the second half Heracles sorted out themselves. After one hour Everton Ramos da Silva tapped in after a cross by Samuel Armenteros who also created the second goal after he got torpedoed by Roda goalie Pawel Kieszek who received a red card. Midfielder Willie Overtoom converted the penalty into a 2-1 lead.

FC Groningen - PSV 3-0

After losing three times in a row FC Groningen finally grabbed a win. League Leaders PSV recorded their third defeat of the season. PSV played unmotivated and everything they tried failed. Just before the half hour mark Korean striker Hyun-Jun Suk scored the 1-0 in the far corner after a one-two with Dusan Tadic. Shortly after half time FC Groningen's Leandro Bacuna scored the 2-0 with a powerful effort. But the "goal of the week" came in the 74th minute when Suk could benefit from chaos in the PSV defense and scored with a lob from over 40 yards to seal a 3-0 win.

Ajax - NEC Nijmegen 4-1

Ajax didn't have much troubles with their visitors. Russian striker Dmitry Bulykin scored after five minutes after a great action by Siem de Jong. Four minutes later Jan Vertonghen scored the 2-0 from a corner and after 27 minutes it was again Bulykin who scored Ajax' third but had to be subbed shortly after. After 57 minutes De Jong put a crown on his work by scorind the 4-0 from a corner. NEC managed to grab a goal when young rightback Ricardo van Rhijn gave away an unnecessary corner kick which got headed home by Rens van Eijden.

FC Utrecht - AZ 3-0

Just like last season AZ got a beating in Utrecht. The runners-up in the league could grab the lead but FC Utrecht started fierce. In the 13th minute AZ captain Niklas Moisander had to use the emergency brake when Nana Asare was going for goal. Referee Pol van Boekel handed Moisander a red card and Gerndt scored the 1-0 from the spot. Again Gerndt (in the 21st minute) and Edouard Duplan (in the 41st) increased the score to 3-0 before half time. In the second half both teams kept eachother in balance and Utrecht's lead was never in danger.

Vitesse - FC Twente 1-4

FC Twente brought the difference with PSV and AZ back to three points after a win in Arnhem against Vitesse. After six minutes they grabbed the lead when Leroy Fer scored after Guram Kashia cleared a ball from the goal line.  In the 65th minute Luuk de Jong scored the 0-2 after Chelsea hireling Tomas Kalas misplaced a simple pass. Ola John put the score to 3-0 with a powerful short from a difficult angle. Ivorian striker Bony could have brought Vitesse closer to Twente but his penalty hit the crossbar. Two minutes later Nacer Chadli surprised goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen in the near corner. Vitesse did get their goal when Dutch/Japanese striker Mike Havenaar scored the 1-4.
