Dutch Eredivisie Round-Up: Week 23

Sunday 26th February 2012
Just like last week four Eredivisie teams played a midweek match in the Europa League. Ajax went out of the European competition after beating Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford. Twente knocked out Steaua Bucharest while PSV and AZ did the same to Trabzonspor and Anderlecht. At the start of the week the difference in points between leaders PSV and number 6 Ajax was only five points.

RKC Waalwijk 1 - 0 Vitesse

RKC Waalwijk delivered Vitesse it's sixth defeat of 2012. RKC won with 1-0 thanks to a goal of ex-Liverpool player Krisztián Nemeth. Vitesse tried to score an equalizer but Renato Ibarra hit the crossbar.

NAC Breda 4 - 0 ADO Den Haag

NAC Breda finally won their first match of 2012. In their own Rat Verlegh Stadium NAC beat ADO, who also hadn't yet managed to get a win in the new year, with 4-0.  At half time NAC was leading 2-0 thanks to goals by Santi Kolk and Kees Luijckx. In the second half Santi Kolk's second and a goals by Eric Botteghin sealed a 4-0 win.

Roda JC 0 - 2 De Graafschap

Just a week after De Graafschap's manager Andries Ulderink got fired, his succesor shocked the Eredivisie by beating a superior Roda JC away with 2-0. Within the half hour mark striker Rydell Poepon scored the surprising 0-1 and in the dying seconds of the match fellow striker Soufian el Hassnaoui made the shock even bigger by scoring De Graafschap's second.

VVV-Venlo 3 - 1 Heracles Almelo

Another surprise when low-flying VVV-Venlo beat Heracles Almelo with 3-1. VVV had a magnificent start and was 2-0 up just around the thirty minutes. Right before half time Heracles pulled back one thanks to winger Lerin Duarte but in the final minute of the game Japanese striker Robert Cullen scored the 3-1. VVV-Venlo now won three games in a row. A form which may help them escape from the relegation zone.

NEC 4 - 0 FC Groningen

Only six days after their glorious 3-0 win over title contenders PSV FC Groningen lost 4-0 to NEC. It must have been pathetic for the Groningen fans to watch their team going down without a trace. NEC put down a great performance with Leroy George scoring twice. Thanks to goals bij Lasse Schöne and John Goossens it ended in 4-0

Excelsior 1 - 4 Ajax

Ajax had a lot of trouble with relegation-battling Excelsior. Ajax went 1-0 up thanks to a goal bij Aras Özbiliz. Excelsior had a great chance to pull level but Ajax-goalie Kenneth Vermeer saved Excelsior's penalty. Right before half time Siem de Jong headed home for a two goal difference. Ajax level dropped giving Excelsior's Mattheij the opportunity to score the 2-1 from a corner but in the 87th and 90th minute it was again Siem de Jong and captain Jan Vertonghen that shot Ajax into safe haven.

PSV 3 - 2 Feyenoord

Feyenoord had to travel to Eindhoven without their topscorer John Guidetti and went down 2-0 just after an hour of play. But after Guidetti's replacement Guyon Fernandez escaped from a red card (he headbutted PSV defender Marcelo), he scored twice to pull back level. Just five minutes before time Zakarya Labyad scored the winning goal after Feyenoord defender Martins Indi walked in goalkeeper Erwin Mulder's way.

FC Twente 1 - 0 FC Utrecht

Steve McLaren's FC Twente beat Utrecht with 1-0 thanks to a goal by Luuk de Jong. For Twente it was there third 1-0 win in their last four matches. Thanks to this win Twente keeps track of leaders PSV.

AZ 3 - 3 SC Heerenveen

After a spectaculair match between the number two (AZ) of the league and the number three (Heerenveen) both teams had to settle with a draw. At half time the score was 1-0 thanks to a goal by American striker Jozy Altidore. SC heerenveen pulled back thanks to Filip Djuricic but only a minute later AZ went up thanks to Altidore's second goal of the day. Against all flow of play SC Heerenveen grabbed the lead thanks to Bas Dost and Luciano Narsingh, who might leave Heerenveen after this season for Ajax. But in the 83th minute Erik Falkenburg equalized setting the final score to 3-3
