Dutch Eredivisie Round-Up: Week 24

Sunday 4th March 2012
The Dutch Eredivisie is getting more exciting by the week. Just ten rounds to go before a new champion will be crowned. The top 6 is getting tighter and tighter. And this week the number 1 (PSV) was hosting the number 3 (FC Twente). Another question is "Who will be relegated?" Number 18 (Excelsior) will be relegated directly while the numbers 16 and 17 will have to go through play-offs. VVV-Venlo were big favourites to go down but thanks to their new manager Ton Lokhoff they already won three games in a row and the safety zone is only one point away.

ADO Den Haag - SC Heerenveen 0-0

After a series of good matches SC Heerenveen played a very disappointing draw against low-flying ADO Den Haag, who are still chasing their first win of the year. The match ended in a goalless draw because Heerenveen's strikers weren't on form. The 0-0 was Heerenveen's first match this season in which they didn't score.

RKC Waalwijk - Excelsior 1-0

With their ninth win of the season RKC climbed up to the ninth place of the season. RKC were the better team in the first half and took the lead when Geoffrey Castillion, who is on loan from Ajax, scored after a quick attack.

VVV-Venlo - NAC Breda 2-1

VVV won their fourth match in a row. The first half was a pretty dull affair. In the second half NAC went 1-0 up after an own goal by Istmo Vorstermans. But it was VVV that stole the three points when Cullen and Yoshida managed to score in the final five minutes. VVV's Four wins in a row is the first time this has been achieved since 1961.

AZ Alkmaar - Heracle Almelo 3-1

AZ took back the leading position in the league on Saturday night. The first half hour was really entertaining to watch and after 30 minutes Simon Poulsen scored the opening goal of the match. Just before half time striker Jozy Altidore scored the 2-0. But the best goal of the night came in the second half from Adam Maher. The young playmaker lobbed the ball over keeper Remko Pasveer. Heracles managed to pull one back after AZ-defender handled the ball on the line and received a red card. Willie Overtoom converted the penalty to seal the 3-1 score.

Vitesse - De Graafschap 2-0

After winning their first match of 2012 last week, Vitesse managed to pull off another win. In the "Geldersche Derby" Vitesse didn't had a lot of trouble with their neighbours of De Graafschap. Ivorian striker Wilfried Bony scored in the first half and after half time Japanese striker Mike Havenaar doubled the score.

Ajax - Roda JC 4-1

Ajax managed to get there third 4-1 win in a row. After beating NEC and Excelsior they beat Roda JC this week with the same figures. Roda went 1-0 up just before half time when Ajax winger Lorenzo Ebecilio made a bad pass which led to Sanharib Malki scoring his 17th goal of the season. In the second half Ebecilio made up more than enough for his mistake. After an hour he scored the equalizer with a screamer from outside of the box. Vurnon Anita scored the 2-1 after a great play by Christian Eriksen. After that Ebecilio scored another screamer and in the dying seconds of the game he sealed his hattrick and the 4-1 score.

Feyenoord - FC Groningen 1-0

Feyenoord didn't had one of their best matches, but did produce a win thanks to midfielder Jordi Clasie's first senior home goal for Feyenoord. For FC Groningen Leandro Bacuna was close to scoring an equalizer but his volley hit the post.

FC Utrecht - NEC Nijmegen 0-0

An unsatisfying match for both teams. FC Utrecht had the better chances in the first half but none of those chances where really dangerous. At the beginning of the second half the match lived up a bit with chances for Leroy George and Lasse Schöne (NEC) and Edouard Duplan (FC Utrecht) but after that phase the level dropped back quickly.

PSV - FC Twente 2-6

FC Twente destroyed PSV's title dreams by beating them 2-6. During half time the score was 0-4 thanks to goals by  Ola John, Willem Janssen, Peter Wisgerhof and Luuk de Jong. In the second half FC Twente defender Douglas received a red card after kicking PSV captain Ola Toivonen. The same Toivonen pulled one back after 55 minutes. Leroy Fer put the margine back to 4 after a rush starting from his own half. Again Toivonen scored with a header for 2-5 but in the 87th minute Willem Janssen scored his second and Twente's sixth of the day.
