Europa League Results

Friday 16th September 2011
After looking at the line-ups and then seeing the results, I don't think that any of the English sides competing in the Europa League can be too dissatisfied.

Stoke are flying at the moment and are turning into a really good team. Even with this said though, they are new to the European scene and travelling to Ukraine to face Kiev is a difficult task. Taking away a point is a positive result and, at home, they will fancy their chances later in the competition.

Fulham faced difficult opponents too and with league form contrasting greatly with that of Stoke's. Jol sent out a very strong team and played against opponents who have improved immeasurably over the last few seasons. Not losing this game gives the London side a platform on which to improve.

Birmingham played opposition who will perhaps fancy themselves in this competition. Last season's runners up were a daunting task for a Championship side to face. Despite this, I am sure there were positives for Hughton to take out of the game.

Finally, there was Spurs. Spurs fielded a very young team, it's average age was 23 and they were extremely well equipped, battling it out in an intimidating atmosphere. Redknapp says that he is taking this competition seriously but his team selection perhaps went against this view. Based on the result though, Spurs can go far, using their kids in the process.
