Everton must keep Romelu Lukaku at all costs!

Thursday 16th March 2017
It came to light on Tuesday afternoon that Everton's talisman up top, Romelu Lukaku, had rejected the most lucrative contract offer in the club's history and had no intention of renewing his deal with The Toffees.

Throughout the past three-and-a-half seasons, Lukaku has been at the heart of almost all of Everton's successes. Surpassing club legend Duncan Ferguson as the club's top Premier League goal scorer and cementing his name as one of the hottest prospects in the game at just 23-years of age. The big striker has impressed most with his impact so early on in his career with no signs of wavering, in fact, he only seems to be improving his talents. Recent reports suggested the Goodison park club were keen to tie him to a new contract as soon as possible to ward off any interest from elsewhere. However, the young Belgian has, in turn, rejected the offer and it seems he will be looking to move on in the summer.

The news is sure to concern the club and the Everton fans alike. Romelu Lukaku is pivotal towards the Merseysiders progressing as a team and achieving the holy grail of Champions League football. He currently sits joint top of the race for the golden boot in the Premier League this season with 19 goals, further proof of the importance he holds for the club. So one thing is undoubtedly clear, Everton must keep hold of Lukaku at all costs if they do indeed hope to progress as a club!

Natural prolific goalscorers at the highest level are worth their weight in gold. They are difficult to come by and when a club does find themselves with a top class striker they must do everything they can to keep them, and also build their team around that player. So far Everton has attempted to do just that and there is a strong feeling the club will look to spend big in the summer and bring more reinforcements for a top four challenge. Making the importance of keeping Lukaku at Goodison Park all the more vital.

We have seen the effects of a team's best player leaving prove too tough to take in the recent past. Everton's derby rivals Liverpool, of course, lost Luis Suarez to Barcelona and failed to reach the top four in the following season. Tottenham were powerless to stop Gareth Bale leaving for Madrid in 2013 and despite finding their feet now it was certainly a case of two steps back at first. If Ronald Koeman did indeed lose his main man in the summer it would only make his rebuilding job all the more difficult. Yes, he could go out and buy a ready-made world class replacement but any player has to be convinced to join the project! Something so many clubs have found difficult in the past, cash to spend but no pulling power of the highest level to couple together.

For now, we must sit and wait patiently whilst rumours circulate of where Lukaku may leave for and of course, who Everton may turn to in order to solve their striker issue. But the main aim for the situation must be to keep him around and the only way that seems possible is to convince him the goal of a top four finish and silverware is just around the corner. The club can only do this by bringing players in, which they will no doubt have to outline to Lukaku in order to convince him. Perhaps an agreement of one more year in Everton blue to give them the chance of greater things would be the best the club can achieve at this stage.

From now till the window, you can be sure that many teams' names will be circulating the ever famous rumour mill to try and capture the services of such a natural goalscorer. For the neutral fan, it's sure to cause excitement, for the Everton faithful, however, it will no doubt cause heartbreak and agony.
