F.C Barcelona 2011 Starting XI Review

By Evan
Sunday 1st January 2012
F.C Barcelona have amassed a tally of 5 trophies this year, scored 170 goals and have had more possesion than any team they have played. Barcelona have started with a principal XI of Valdes, Abidal, Puyol, Pique, Alves, Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, Villa, Pedro and of course Messi. I will now review and rate each player one by one.

1.                                                                                             Victor Valdes

Victor Valdes's year has been a year of record breaking. Valdes now holds Barca's most apps for a keeper and most time without conceding. Valdes has also won the Zamora the award given to the keeper with the lowest goals conceded ratio. At Barca it is difficult to be a keeper because you have to pass the ball out of the back and Valdes is the worlds best keeper with the ball at his feet. Another reason it is hard to be a keeper at Barca is you have to keep your concentration because Barca always have lots of possession. Valdes has had an immaculate season making saves at crucial times so I give him a rating of 8.0 out of 10.

2.                                                                                               Eric Abidal

Eric Abidal this year has had to overcome a potential life treatning disease in his case a Cancerous Liver tumor. Otherwise he has had a very solid season and it was highlighted by him coming back to lift the Champions League trophy. Cool, calm and collected Abi gets a 7.5 out of 10.

3.                                                                                                Gerard Pique

Gerard Pique is no doubt Barca's best ball playing centre half and on his day the worlds best. Pique was brought up trough La Masia but had left for Manchester United only to return home after a Zaragaoza loan spell. Pique's year has been very good with him effectively winning the league with his goal against Villareal. Elegance is his middle name and Pique gets an 8.5 out of 10.

4.                                                                                                   Carles Puyol

Carles Puyol is as vital to Barca as Messi is in many ways. As Pique once said of Puyol that even when we are 3-0 up with a few seconds to go he still shouts at me and that typifies Puyol. He is Barcelona's beast in the heart of the defence and although he has had many injuries his few displays have been brilliant. The beast gets a 8.0 out of 10.

5.                                                                                                    Dani Alves

Dani Alves is what some might call a typical Brazilian, with his cheeky attitude and a big element of swagger. Dani is a supposed right back but truth be told he isn't, he is a right winger. He defends only about twenty percent of a game the rest of the time he will be bombing forward.  Dani Alves's year has been great with many assists and some goals. Dancing to that samba beat Dani gets an 8.5 out of 10.

6.                                                                                                    Sergio Busquets

Sergio Busquets is hated by some and loved by many but his controversial attitude is overshadowed by his technique, passing and tackling ability. An impressive stat that Busquets occupies is in the Club World Cup he completed every single pass he attempted. Busquets has had a mercurial season and has tackled his way to a 9.0 out of 10.

7.                                                                                                           Xavi

Xavi is Mr.Barca, he optimises Barca what is about, which is pass and move to create space and play penetrating balls. There was a time when Xavi felt that he had to leave Barca because of the overwhelming pressure of replacing Pep Guardiola but thankfully he didn't. One of Xavi's finest momments was officially having made the most appearances for F.C Barcelona. Xavi has passed his way to a 9.5 out of 10.

8.                                                                                                   Andres Iniesta

Don Andres will be forever indeared in the hearts of all Spaniards for scoring the winning goal in the World Cup Final. Andres has a habit of taking the biggest games by the scruff of the neck like in Rome, Stamford Bridge, Wembley and Soccer City. Iniesta dribbles and slaloming runs have been amazing this year, so I give him a 9.5 out of 10.

9.                                                                                                      David Villa

David Villa is mainly a centre foward but when he came to Barca he was told that he was going to be deployed on the wing. David Villa being the hardworking player that he is changed aspects of his play and adapted which is harder than it seems. Star names such as Eto'o and Zlatan have faltered where Villa has prevailed. El Guaje has worked his way to a 8.5 out of 10.

10.                                                                                                      Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi: 55 goals, 22 assists and FIFA Ballond'or winner 3 years in a row enough said really... Messi has messimerised his way to a 10 out of 10.

11.                                                                                                        Pedro

Pedro is a fan favourite for his work ethic and knack of scoring important goals. Ronaldo famously said to Pedro, "who are you?", Pedro minutes later scored. Pedro is sumed up by Pep Guardiola who said, "if Pedro were not with us he would be Brazilian and called Pedroinha and we wouldn't be able to afford him". Pedro has calmly finished his way to a 8.5 out of 10.

So their you go my 2011 starting XI review. Hope you enjoyed it!
