Feyenoord smash 8 past Go Ahead Eagles

Thursday 6th April 2017
The Eredivisie has always been a fascinating league whether you have seen a couple of matches or you watch most fixtures religiously. With newer clubs entering the division there is more dynamic than ever before.

One fixture that just recently occurred was that of  14-time Eredivisie champions Feyenoord taking on newly promoted side Go Ahead Eagles. Feyenoord had won 23 of their 28 games while Go Ahead Eagles had only managed six victories.

After just nine minutes Feyenoord were 1-0 up through a goal from Jens Toornstra. Eljero Elia made it 2-0 after 15 minutes. Elia managed to run from the left wing to cut inside and shoot from 20 yards out. The ball was slotted in the bottom left-hand side past the Go Ahead Eagles keeper Zwarthoed.
Dirk Kuyt made it three after just 30 minutes. This was a landmark for Kuyt as it was his 150th Eredivisie league goal. A lovely bit of passing in midfield led to Elia skipping past a defender and crossing the ball into the box. A shot was scuffed in the box and the ball fell kindly to Kuyt to tap-in from a few yards out.

Go Ahead Eagles were clearly struggling and Feyenoord was not willing to slow down the pace of the game. Toornstra got his second of the game to make it 4-0. Another lovely piece of great play by the Feyenoord midfield to find it's way forward and a rebound was struck home by Toornstra.

Jan-Arie Van Der Heijden made it 5-0 right before half-time. An unanticipated freekick made a couple of deflections in the box putting off  Zwarthoed. This led to Van Der Heijden dribbling around him to slot the ball into the back of the net. The Deutsch defender had all the luck for the goal. As for the Go Ahead Eagles defence, not so much.

Half time could not have come soon enough for Go Ahead Eagles as they felt embarrassed with what had just happened. They haven't had the best of seasons. But to have thrown the game away so early was not what the "Deventer" fans would have wanted. Robert Maaskant's side knew things wouldn't get easier as the game played on.

Feyenoord centre-back Eric Botteghin managed to contribute to a team effort with a goal on 50 minutes to make it 6-0. The Brazilian headed in from Van Der Heijden who headed the ball across the box. The Go Ahead Eagles defence started to come to terms of Feyenoord's quality.

On 72 minutes Michiel Kramer made it 7-0. More midfield build up was key as Steven Berghuis was picked out on the right wing. He then crossed a great ball into the box to Kramer. The Feyenoord forward then headed the ball to the far side and extended the lead even further.
However, Feyenoord was not done still and Toornstra wanted his hat trick. In the final strokes of the game, the ball fell to Toornstra and smashed the ball on the volley from 10 yards out. The ball flew into the far side of the net and Feyenoord were 8-0 up.

This game showed the level of difference between a title contending team against another team who are struggling to survive. Although Go Ahead Eagle fans would probably not accept such a bad loss, they will feel that they need to focus if they want to stay up this season.

Go Ahead Eagles now lie five points from safety while Feyenoord are placed on top of the league. They are also three points ahead of Ajax. It could be a very interesting run in towards the end of the season. There isn't much of a gap between relegation battled teams. It could also be a close call for the title contenders as well.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
