5 great buy-back deals as Angelino returns to Man City

Manchester City just re-signed defender Angelino from PSV Eindhoven despite only selling him to the Dutch side last August. The 22-year-old came through the youth ranks at the Etihad Stadium after joining from Deportivo de la Coruna aged just 16. He impressed in loan spells before PSV swooped to take him permanently.
As part of that £5 million deal, City inserted a buy-back clause into the sale that they have now activated. The Eredivisie club say they'll receive £10.5 million. The Sky Blues claim it’s actually £5.35 million.
It’s not surprising for PSV to claim to have made a bigger profit to save face. It’s equally plausible that the English side wish to keep public expenditures down considering their Financial Fair Play problems. Can we look forward to claims the reported £62 million fee for Rodri has a dot in the middle?
On its face, City pulled-off a clever bit of business. Both fees are extremely low for a young player who racked up a goal and 10 assists in the Dutch top flight in 2018/19. He will also count towards Pep Guardiola’s home-grown player quota, a nice bonus.
Deals of this type are uncommon but hardly unprecedented. Many clubs slip a buy-back clause into a promising player's sale. A few go on to activate them. Let’s take a look at five of the best.
