Five Players To Watch In The New MLS Season

Friday 16th March 2012
The MLS is back and in some style. The first week of the season had everything, from tantrums to debut goals.

Here are the top five players to keep an eye out for in the MLS in 2012:

1. Freddy Adu

What hasn't been said about the lad? Subjected to massive press hype when he emerged as a 'wonderkid' several years ago and on the back of failed moves to Europe, Philadelphia Union have offered Adu the perfect chance to show what he can do. With less pressure on his back and with more emphasis on his talents, I expect Adu to be crucial in leading the Union's season. He undoubtedly has the quality, now it is time for him to perform.

2. Ryan Meara

The New York Red Bulls stayed to form and continued to be dysfunctional on the opening weekend of the season. A well documented goalkeeping disaster has left them with no experience between the sticks. But this was hard to tell considering Meara's debut performance, as he denied FC Dallas the hugely dominant score they deserved.

3. Kris Boyd

Portland Timbers may have lost Kenny Cooper to New York this season, but that won't matter with Kris Boyd around. The former Rangers and Nottingham Forest man has already scored the MLS goal of the week on his debut, which isn't a bad way to start your career in America. He even got the quote of the week from the commentator: "New country, same currency" - a fitting way to describe a goal machine.

4. CJ Sapong:

Sapong won the MLS Rookie of the Year last season, and I fully expect the Sporting Kansas City forward to continue his form into the new season. Another player who scored in his first game of the season, I expect Sarpong to be up near the top of the goalscoring charts this season.

5. Patrice Bernier

It can't be easy playing in a club's first ever MLS game. But, while there was clearly some nerves around him in the Montreal Impact team, Bernier dictated play and did his job without major impact but with minimal fuss and commitment. He'll be expected to lead the team throughout their first season in the big time, and he sure seems capable.
