France v Honduras Odds: Les Bleus hot favourites to open 2014 World Cup with a win

The World Cup is now in full flow, Jack Kitson returns with a preview of the Group E match between France and Honduras

Group E gets in on the act on Sunday with Switzerland, Ecuador, France and Honduras all bidding to get off to a roaring start. The latter two clash at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre at 8pm on BBC, with France the red-hot 4/11 favourites with most bookmakers to win their first opening World Cup match since 1998, the year they won the tournament on home soil.

In fact Les Bleus have remarkably won only one of their last nine group stage matches, which is a staggering statistic considering that they finished runners-up in 2006. They will be doubly determined to make up for their disastrous performance four years ago in South Africa, where they finished rock-bottom of a favourable group - featuring Uruguay, Mexico and the hosts - with nothing but a pitiful point to their name.

France may be traditionally slow starters but even with the loss of star man Franck Ribery - along with the surprising exclusion of Samir Nasri - it shouldn't prevent them from easing through to the knockout-stages, with Didier Deschamps' men a decent price at 4/5 with Bet Victor to top the fifth group.

However, Honduras are certainly no pushovers as their battling goalless draw with England showed. Los Catrachos will be appearing in the World Cup for only the third time in their history, compared with what will be France's 14th showing. Their main aim will be recording their first ever victory, having failed to win any of their previous six games (3D 3L). Although Luis Fernando Suárez's men are a 12/1 long shot with Bet365 to grab their maiden victory over France this weekend, but a draw may be a more realistic outcome at 4/1 with the same bookmaker.

If France play to their full potential then they could easily run riot in Porto Alegre. Deschamps has an exciting array of talent at his disposal, with Real Madrid star Karim Benzema leading the way at 7/2 in the first goalscorer market. The striker can also be found at 21/20 to

The teams will be locking horns for the very first time on Sunday, and to be honest an upset is unlucky, despite France's frustrating ability to switch off during games. Les Bleus should come out comfortable winners, although their route to victory may not be as easy as some may think. A 2-0 win at 5/1 with Betfred seems the most straight-forward bet, while the European side are priced at 10/11 with the same bookmaker to win to nil.

Honduras will no doubt be attempting to grind out a draw, as they did against the Three Lions, and another goalless scoreline can be found at 19/2 with Bet Victor, whereas a score draw could be the way to go at 6/1 with Paddy Power. Meanwhile, with nearly one goal every other game for his county Carlos Costly looks like the Central American side's best bet for a goal at 6/1.
