Francesco Totti: A Legend At 40

Monday 20th February 2017
This weekend saw Italian frontman Francesco Totti become the 10th oldest player to make an appearance in the league. Not only has he just achieved this landmark but he has made a prolific career from his goal scoring abilities.

Totti came on as a substitute against Torino in a 4-1 win late in the game. Despite coming on late, he still managed to set up Radja Nainggolan for the final goal. This win contributes to Roma's position in 2nd place.

Becoming the 10th oldest player to make an appearance in Serie A, Totti appeared at the age of 40 years 4 months and 23 days. An impressive feat and many football fans around the globe will recognise Totti for his tenure and loyalty to one club through his whole career. When somebody mentions Roma, to me I would instantly think Totti. He has been the face of the club for a number of years.
He started his senior career at Roma back in 1992. Yes, that is a long time ago. But what a career he has had. Making 774 appearances for Roma and scoring 307 goals as of yet, Totti has broken many records in the beautiful game. He is the 2nd all time top goal scorer in Serie A on 250 league goals behind Silvio Piola on 274.

He has won the Serie A Italian Footballer of The Year five times. He has also won the Serie A Footballer of The Year twice and the Oscar Del Calcio award a record-breaking eleven times. He became the UEFA Champions League oldest goal scorer at the age of 38 years and 59 days. Totti also won the 2006 World Cup with Italy against France.

Totti may not have had the goal scoring down to a tee for Italy, with just 9 goals in 58 appearances but he is one of the most respected footballers in his home nation. Even though the Italian is now retired internationally he was considered to be called up again as he was still seen as one of the best Italian players around.

Totti's style of play consists of finishing ability, able to pass first time, vision, dynamic range of passing but best of all, his knowledge of the game. The ability to read a play and work out the best action in a certain situation. A creative forward who is also versatile being able to play as a number 10 and a winger.
If you've watched a game with Totti in you instantly recognise why he is still in the game at the age of 40. Such a clever player and he has played with the best in the world. He has also been managed by some of the best in the world too.

Totti has had an illustrious career so far playing 25 seasons with Roma in Serie A. He first appeared at the age of 16 and now he has won Serie A on one occasion, the Coppa Italia twice and the Supercoppa Italiana twice with his beloved Roma.

So here is to an absolute legend of a footballer who we wish all the best for and long may he continue his career. An iconic figure not just in Italian football but around the world.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
