Ghana Tipped To Beat Ivory Coast In African Cup of Nations Final

Saturday 7th February 2015
The African Cup of Nations descended into chaos on Thursday during Ghana's interrupted victory over hosts Equatorial Guinea, but it is hoped that it's the football that takes centre stage on Sunday night when the Black Stars take on Ivory Coast in what promises to be a cracking 2015 Final.

The eagerly anticipated duel is a repeat of the 1992 Final which remains the Ivory Coast's only triumph. The Elephants have frustratingly failed to win another trophy since, losing Finals in 2006 and 2012, with a fourth-place finish sandwiched in between. Meanwhile four-time AFCON winners Ghana will be gunning to make it five on Sunday by claiming their first win since way back in 1982. In recent years the Black Stars have finished third in 2012 & 2013, runners-up in 2010 and third in 2008, but they have peaked at the right time and will really fancy themselves to succeed in Africa's battle of the big guns. Ghana didn't enjoy the best of starts to the 2015 tournament after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Senegal, however they bounced back with wins over Algeria and South Africa as they took top spot in Group C. In both the quarter-finals and semi-finals Avram Grant's troops went on to record comprehensive back-to-back 3-0 victories over Guinea and Equatorial Guinea, which puts them in great stead ahead of the Final; and they are now priced at 5/2 to go on and win the coveted trophy (in 90 minutes).

The Ivory Coast left it late in the group stages, with Herve Renard's men drawing their opening two games against Guinea and Mali, before registering a narrow 1-0 victory over Cameroon. However the Elephants have found their form in the knockout-stages following consecutive 3-1 triumphs over Algeria and then DR Congo. Wilfred Bony & co have been installed as the 7/5 favourites with Bet365 to come out on top in normal time and finally end years of hurt by hoisting their first AFCON in 35 years. Both teams are in cracking form, meaning it is difficult to pick a winner for Sunday's showcase spectacle, making a draw a tempting bet at 9/4 with Betfred. If this is the outcome extra-time would then ensue, with the Elephants priced at 10/1 to win in this period, whereas the Black stars can be found at the slightly longer price of 12/1, both with Bet Victor, who have handed each side odds of 12/1 to succeed via penalties.

AFCON Finals tend to be low scoring affairs, however we fancy Sunday's game to deter from the norm. Both teams have bagged three goals in their last two matches, making both teams to score look decent value at 6/5 with William Hill. Elsewhere over 2.5 goals is priced at 13/8, while Ghana are available at 7/1 to win, but concede, within 90 minutes.

Ghana's Andre Ayew heads into the match as the tournaments joint top goalscorer (with four other players) with three goals to his name. The striker represents a decent bet 8/1 with most bookmakers, while he can be found at 7/2 to net anytime, whereas Christian Atsu is priced at 9/2. Over on the Ivory Coast teamsheet Wilfred Bony, Gervinho and Max Gradel all have two goals to their name so far, and they have been handed odds of 11/5, 3/1 and 11/2 to add to their respective tallies this weekend.

Steve has been avid follower of Bristol City and trips to Ashton Gate since the mid 1990s have seen him fall in love with the club, but success has hardly been a regular emotion felt by him and twin that with England's failures he has not tasted to many exciting days as a football fan. However, he enjoys all parts of the "Beautiful Game" and whether it's a Champions League match or Conference clash, Steve enjoys watching the heat of the battle. Sport is certainly his passion, but football is the one that gets him excited the most and he will be looking to provide some informative, yet sometimes controversial pieces for you to enjoy as the reader.
