Good riddance: West Ham fans unite against Dimitri Payet after Marseille move

Monday 30th January 2017
It's official. West Ham rebel, Dimitri Payet, finally got his wish to leave the club and has returned to his former team, Olympique Marseille.

The 29-year-old's transfer saga has definitely been the biggest of a fairly passive January transfer window. He rejoins the French side for £25 million barely 18 months after making the switch to the Premier League for just £10 million.

Marseille and Payet are obviously the biggest winners with the club wasting little time in confirming the capture of the midfield maestro.
It was, however, a bitter end to a love story between the Hammers and Payet. In only his debut season in the Premier League, the Frenchman helped West Ham to a seventh place finish which earned him the club's Player of the Year - narrowly missing out to Riyad Mahrez in the PFA Player of the Year award. His superb displays had already won the hearts of the fans with the club offering him a new five-and-a-half-year contract in February last year to make him the highest-paid player.
But sadly, it turned out that their romance wasn't meant to last. This has left everyone at the club disappointed with the 29-year-old whom they gave everything, yet turned his back on them.

"The Club would like to place on record its sincere disappointment that Dimitri Payet did not show the same commitment and respect to West Ham United that the Club and fans showed him, particularly when it rewarded him with a lucrative new five-and-half-year deal only last year, " West Ham's co-chairman, David Sullivan, said.

His son, Jack, also registered his frustration by comparing the Frenchman to a snake via a Twitter post on Monday morning.
However, none could compare to that of the fans who couldn't hide their displeasure over his departure.

If the sport has 11-men on each side, a ball and lasts for 90 minutes then I'll write about it. Simply put, I'm an unrepentant soccer freak that other freaks will, however, call a geek. I do find time for music when not watching the beautiful game, though and have been known to produce the odd track.
