Four of the most horrifying football injuries of the last decade

Thursday 26th January 2017
Last week Hull City's Ryan Mason suffered a dreadful head injury after colliding with Chelsea's Gary Cahill. The injury sort of reminded us that even ‘the beautiful game' can turn unpleasant sometimes.

Injuries like this could be life threatening. Ryan Mason's skull was fractured and it required several minutes of treatment on the spot before he was taken off to the hospital. In 2006, Petr Cech then Chelsea goalkeeper sustained a similar kind of head injury. However, the good news is that Hull City have confirmed that Ryan Mason is stable and making excellent progress.
Generally, tackles are not intended to harm the player but, sometimes it may be intended so, protecting the body while playing has become a prime objective. Yet, there is no guarantee of safety in a game like football which involves much physicality. Misadventures can occur anytime.

Injuries are now considered as the part of the game, an occupational hazard.

Here's a list comprising some of the most horrific injuries of the last decade that will leave you winced.

Eduardo (Arsenal) vs. Birmingham City (2008)

In February 2008, Arsenal's summer signing Eduardo da Silva suffered an awful injury just three minutes into the game.
The Croatian international beat Birmingham's Martin Taylor, in the follow-up Taylor caught him on the shin which cracked his fibula and it was made more severe when he dislocated his left ankle. After seven minutes of treatment on the field, the striker was carried off the field on a stretcher.

Referee Mike Dean immediately gave marching orders to the Birmingham man. The other players on the field look despaired after what they saw.

Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) vs. Stoke City (2010)

Almost exactly two years after Eduardo's injury Arsenal's teenage midfielder Aaron Ramsey became the victim of another devastating injury.

Though it looked like a 50-50 challenge but, if you look closely, you can say that it was a nasty challenge from Shawcross, which caused a double fracture to Ramsey's right leg.
The referee does send off Shawcross and the Stoke City captain left the pitch in tears after he realised the severity of the injury.

The Gunners might have sealed their most sensational victory of the season with two late goals. But manager Arsene Wenger was more worried about the injury despite the result.

Luke Shaw (Manchester United) vs. PSV Eindhoven (2016)

One of the most promising prospects of England, Luke Shaw was signed by Manchester United in summer of 2014 becoming the most expensive teenage defender. After having a solid first season with United Shaw started every league game under the management of Van Gaal until mid-September.

In the opening group match of Champions League against PSV Eindhoven, Shaw was caught on a sliding tackle by Hector Moreno and suffered a double leg fracture.
Following the nine minutes treatment on the pitch, he was taken off on the stretcher. Who would've thought of this, a Champions League debut for a player will turn into a nightmare for him.

Demba Ba (Shanghai Shenhua) vs. Shanghai SIPG

Former Newcastle and Chelsea forward Demba Ba was the sufferer of another horrendous career-threatening injury while playing for Shanghai Shenhua in a derby match against Shanghai SIPG in July 2016.

In the 63rd minute, Ba collapsed after colliding with Shanghai SIPG's Sun Xiang. Ba was agonising in pain; it was more of a mishap than a tackle or challenge that broke his leg.
Eventually, Ba was stretchered off from the field following an extended period of treatment.
Zaid Pathan

A huge fan of Peter Drury's bombastic post-goal narration and an ardent football follower since his teens, Zaid believes the beautiful game is the best mode of escape from the daily hustle and bustle. He particularly loves to watch the Premier League and wants English clubs to dominate Europe again.

“Life may or may not be beautiful, but football surely is”
