Jose Fonte would be an excellent addition to a youthful Manchester United defence

Wednesday 24th August 2016
Jose Mourinho has already transformed the Manchester United squad quite considerably since his arrival, but that back line looks extremely young – which could prove to be a weakness come next May. However, there is one signing that could change all that, and it'd be a fairly inexpensive piece of business.
The man in question is Southampton's Jose Fonte. A centre-back who has been on Saints books since 2010, and to this point the Portuguese has played over 250 competitive games out on the South Coast.

Reports have linked Fonte with a huge switch to Manchester United during this transfer window, and this would be yet another astute transfer if Jose Mourinho can pull it off in the week or so left before the transfer season comes to an end.

Coming off the back of an excellent European Championship with his native Portugal, Fonte has emerged as one of the best, most reliable centre-backs in the Premier League, since helping his side to back-to-back promotions

Manchester United's defence is quite clearly talented and has a bright future. Eric Bailly looks like a real monster, but at 22, he is bound to make mistakes. Chris Smalling was, without doubt, the standout player for us in the Premier League last term, and we also have Daley Blind who looks right at home despite defence not being his natural position.

Jose Fonte would add a real maturity into the mix. He's a no-nonsense centre-back who does have the ability to play out from defence when the opportunity arises. He'd be able to fill in on either side, as he's pretty decent with both feet, which is always a plus. He's a real leader, and if he could take the aforementioned Bailly under his wing, there is no doubt that with his guidance, the Ivorian could add a thing or two to his game as well.

Let's not forget that Eric Bailly will be jetting off to the African Cup of Nations for the majority of January and February, so the club will certainly be needing help in that hectic portion of the season.

The way I see it, it's a very risk-free move to make by Jose, and there is absolutely no harm in adding a player of Fonte's calibre to the squad. It would be a relatively cheap deal due to his age, but one that would vastly improve the state of United's defence. Even if it doesn't work out, United would've paid next to nothing to sign him, and he won't be hard to move on because he'll only be on a two-year deal at the very most.

It also presents Fonte with a unique opportunity to go out there and win trophies. That's no disrespect to Southampton by the way, who have been incredible and a real joy to watch since their return to the big time. United are a level up, though, and they have to be considered real contenders for the Premier League title.

If United want this move to happen, they'll have to act quick as we're just over one week away from the transfer deadline, and Southampton will certainly want some time to replace one of their key assets.
