Jose Mourinho's Manchester United enjoyed a successful week

Friday 12th August 2016
Jose Mourinho's plans at Man United have started to come together nicely over the past seven days. On Sunday, Manchester United lifted the first piece of silverware of the season by defeating Leicester City in the Community Shield. Not long after, the club announced the signing of Paul Pogba from Juventus.

Community Shield triumph

The Community Shield is the first meaningful fixture played in the English football calendar, it's a fairly insignificant trophy compared to the bigger prizes on offer at the end of the season, but it remains an important game for both sides involved. Man United went into the game as winners of last season's FA Cup, they came up against reigning Premier League champions Leicester, in front of 85,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium.
Jose Mourinho's side took the lead on the half-hour mark: Jesse Lingard embarked on a solo run - leaving the Leicester defence in his wake, he coolly slotted the ball past the onrushing Kasper Schmeichel - Lingard has been excellent for Man United since he broke into the first team. Man United were good in the first half, they controlled the game, and deservedly took a one-goal lead into the half-time break.

Leicester showed their fighting spirit early in the second half: Jamie Vardy pounced on Marouane Fellaini's sloppy back pass, the England International then calmly rounded David de Gea to slot the ball into an empty net to bring the scores back level. However, with just seven minutes remaining, Zlatan Ibrahimovic won the game for Man United with a sensational header. Ibrahimovic was quiet for most of the match, but he showed his class when it was most needed.

It was an excellent performance from Man United, this result proved that they are capable of beating the best teams in England this season. Jose Mourinho tasted his first success as Man United manager, his team's performance would have pleased him, and he will hope that the Community Shield is the first of many trophies for his side this season.

Paul Pogba signing

Man United sent out a huge statement with the signing of Paul Pogba; the club paid £89 million to secure his services, which is a world record transfer fee. Pogba is one of the global superstars of the game, he's immensely talented, and he could become an instant success in the Premier League.
Pogba began his career at Old Trafford, but due to a lack of first-team games, he moved to Juventus. During his four-year spell in Italy, Pogba established himself in the Juventus first team - he made 178 appearances for the club, scoring 34 times. He also won eight major trophies with Juventus, including the Serie A title four seasons consecutively.

Pogba returns to Man United a far better player than the one who left the club four years ago. Although his ability has never been in doubt, he wasn't the finished article when he left England in 2012, but he has since developed his game, and he's now regarded as one of the best midfielders in Europe.

Man United have shown their intent to win the Premier League in Mourinho's first season in charge. The signing of Pogba has sent a message to their rivals: Man United mean serious business this season, and they are prepared to spend big to regain their place at the top of English football. Pogba's arrival has increased confidence around Old Trafford, the Frenchman now has to deliver on the pitch, and if he does, Man United can achieve big things this season.

Next up for Jose Mourinho's side is their opening Premier League game of the season. Bournemouth v Manchester United is live on Sky Sports 1, Sunday 14th August, kick-off 1:30pm.
