Is Kylian Mbappé the next Thierry Henry?

Sunday 26th February 2017
On Tuesday night a young, world-class talent introduced himself to the world football in the most emphatic of ways. Not only did he score a crucial away goal at the Etihad, he also embarrassed the highly-rated Otamendi time after time. Kylian Mbappé is a name that has been circulating the net for a number of months now but on Tuesday night his talent shone through for all to see.
The French wonder kid has been part of a devastating Monaco attack that has scored 111 goals in all competitions this season. At just 18 years of age, Mbappé has already become one of the most sought-after wingers in Europe, no wonder he's being compared to the great Thierry Henry.

Henry has always been the standard-bearer of French attacking football. The Arsenal and France legend had the perfect mix of pace, finesse, composure, power and skill. However, to be compared to him is usually more of a curse rather than a blessing, as it's probably the hardest compliment ever to live up to. Although, since debuting at the age of 16, Kylian Mbappé has gone a long way in justifying those comparisons.

Like Henry, the 18-year old started his life in football on the left wing despite clearly possessing the versatility to play through the middle. The youngster also mirrors Henry's unique movement of drifting in from the wing to attack the space between the centre-back and full-back. His electrifying pace and close ball control make him a nightmare to defend against one-on-one. Despite all these similarities, the great man himself has come out and quashed the comparisons.
Henry himself may not see the similarities, but the man who first spotted the talent of Henry has given his take on the situation. Arsène Wenger has been full of praise for the youngster in the past, claiming the Monaco forward “could be another Thierry Henry.”

Earlier in the year the Arsenal boss also confirmed that the Gunners were interested in bringing the youngster to the Emirates last summer.

It's said that Arsenal tabled a €40m bid for the France U19 international, but Kylin opted to extend his contract instead. It's said that Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United have now joined the Gunners in the race for the 18-year old's signature.
First, it was Anthony Martial then it was Kingsley Coman, now it's Kylian Mbappé. Every young prodigy that comes out of France gets compared to Thierry Henry, but in the end, only time will tell. At just 18 years of age, Mbappé must not allow the hype to proceed him but to keep on developing his game. Under the stewardship of Leonardo Jardim, it's a guarantee that the youngster will only continue to improve. In my eyes, Kylian Mbappé is not the next Thierry Henry, he's the first Kylian Mbappé. He's so good that he doesn't need to be compared to anyone, his football will instead do the talking for him over the next decade.
