Leigh Griffiths: Forgotten Man?

Wednesday 29th June 2011
With all the drama of Wolves' 2010/11 season, it seems one person has been forgotten. That man is Leigh Griffiths. Since signing for Wolves in January, the closest he has come to first team action was being names on the substitutes bench against Tottenham Hotspur in the 3-3 draw at Molineux.

With a lack of opportunities and the club possibly bringing in yet another striker this summer, chances are he will be heading out on loan, with a move back to Scotland on the cards. These days, it's hard for youngsters to come through the ranks at teams all over the top divisions, with foreign imports being a big part of the modern game. However, don't be surprised if you're seeing Griffiths netting goals at Molineux sooner than later, because at only 20 years of age, he has proved himself as a goal scorer.

After playing for Hibernian and Falkirk in his youth, he moved on to Livingston where he made his debut at only 16. He went on to score 20 goals in 32 appearances for The Lions. His form caught the eye of West Bromwich Albion manager Tony Mowbray, who offered him a trial. However, the departure of the now Middlesbrough manager saw the potential move end.

With the move to West Bromwich Albion off, Dundee stepped in and completed the signing of the hot prospect for £125,000. In the midst of claims from Livingston stating that they hadn't received any payment from Dundee for the striker, he scored 34 goals in 62 games.

His good form for both clubs had seen him represent Scotland at U19 (1 goal in 6 games), U21 (2 goals in 5 games) and B level (1 goal in 1 game).

In his time in his home nation, he wasn't short of honours. He won the Scottish Challenge Cup with Dundee in 2010, Scottish Football League Young Player Of The Month (x5) and Scottish Football League Player Of The Month (September 2009).

The Scotsman will surely be awaiting his chance and will take it with both hands, or feet! He's one to watch!
