Liverpool Taken To Continue Fine Merseyside Derby Form

Friday 6th February 2015
Jack Kitson previews the second Merseyside derby of the season which you can catch on Sky Sports 1 from 5.30pm.

The spotlight is on Steven Gerrard this weekend as he takes to the field for his final Premier League Merseyside Derby. The Liverpool legend leads his in-form troops out at Goodison on Saturday night against an Everton side who finally got back to winning ways last weekend following a barren eight game barren rot.

  • Liverpool are unbeaten in 13 matches in all competitions (in 90 minutes).

  • Everton have only one win from their last nine league & cup games.

  • The Reds are undefeated in nine Merseyside Derbies (W4 L5).

Liverpool head into the showcase spectacle as the 13/10 favourites with Bet Victor following an impressive run of form, which has seen Brendan Rodgers' troops go 13 games without defeat in all competitions (in 90 minutes). As a result the roaring Reds are still in the frame for FA Cup and Europa League glory, while they have crucially propelled themselves back in the riveting race for a top-4 finish, with last season's runners-up now hot on the heels of Southampton, Arsenal and Tottenham.

In contrast an out-of-sorts Everton painfully went eight games without tasting victory, meaning boss Roberto Marrinez's headed into last Saturday's match at Crystal Palace under pressure. However, an early strike from Romelu Lukaku handed the Toffees their first triumph since mid-December, which has undoubtedly done wonders for their confidence ahead of Saturday's visit of their local rivals. The hosts can currently be back at 12/5 to puncture Liverpool's superb streak, whereas a draw is available at the same price.

Liverpool will be gunning to extend their unbeaten run over Everton to 10 games by coming away from Goodison Park with all three points. Their last victory was a 2-0 success back in 2011, and a repeat scoreline could be the way to go at 12/1, which was the outcome of their last weekend's win at home to West Ham. Meanwhile an away win and both teams to score punt is available at 16/5, with a 2-1 scoreline priced at an attractive 9/1 with Bet365.

Everton haven't beaten their city rivals since 2010, which will no doubt be playing on their minds on Saturday. However, their win at Palace came at just the right time, and they will draw confidence from Bolton's impressive performance against the Reds in the cup. Form often goes out the window in crunch derby matches, and the hosts will be hoping that is the case on this occasion, with the Toffees priced at 4/1 to win by exactly one goal. Perhaps a score draw is a more likely outcome at 18/5, with a 1-1 scoreline catching the eye at 6/1 (both with Bet Victor).

Liverpool's immense form has coincided with the dynamite displays of Raheem Sterling who has excelled in attack during the last few months. The rapid 20-year-old has scored in each of his side's last two wins, making him a decent bet at 10/3 to net in another victory on Saturday.  Meanwhile skipper Steven Gerrard is available at 10/3 to score in his third consecutive Merseyside Derby.

Phillippe Coutinho, who will be brimming with confidence after curling home a succulent last-gasp winner at Bolton, can be found at 4/1 to get his name on the scoresheet once again, whereas Daniel Sturridge is a decent shout at 5/1 for last goalscorer.

Over on the home teamsheet Everton will once again be placing their faith in Lukaku who has three goals in his last five games. The Belgian striker, who bagged a brace in this fixture last season, has been handed odds of 9/4 to grab another goal this weekend, while Steven Naismith is priced at 10/3 to do the same.

Other bets that spring to mine include a red card at 2/1, especially considering that this fixture has seen more early baths (20) than any other in Premier League history. Meanwhile both teams to score is priced at 7/10, whereas over 2.5 goals can be found at 20/21.
