Lyon - "Les Gones" Showing Bottle.

Wednesday 28th March 2012
It was three weeks ago that Lyon's season was left in tatters. Being knocked out of the Champions League to Apoel Nicosia after holding a first leg lead was highly damaging for Rémi Garde and his team.

This result also came on a run that saw Lyon collect two points from five league games. The Champions league was slipping away from a club that has competed in the last 12 seasons and been at the height of French football for years.

For some reason it was that defeat against Apoel that sparked a much needed reaction, and it was just in time as it was Lille who were then welcomed to the Stade de Gerland the following weekend.

The dejected Lyon faithful knew that a defeat would see third place Lille go 10 points ahead of Lyon and certainly put an end to hopes of playing in next season's competition. Somehow they scraped a 2-1 win meaning the gap was reduced to four points.

Since then Lyon have won another three games on the bounce, league games against St Etienne and FC Sochaux while progressing to the semi finals of the Coupe de France beating PSG 3-1.

The run of four wins has installed belief into the side which has now climbed the table from seventh to fifth. They still sit four points behind Lille and one behind Toulouse but sit in prime position to take advantage should they slip up.

Lille have arguably the more fixtures, playing both PSG and Montpellier while Lyon's fixture against Toulouse will give them an opportunity to leapfrog them in the league.

Lyon then also have the two cups to salvage their season. A semi final against third tier team G.Ajaccio should see them through to the final of the Coupe de France while they also have the final of the Coupe de Ligue against Marseille to look forward to.

A strong finish to the season and Lyon could still be the team everybody is talking about.
