Manchester City's new signing - Who is Gabriel Jesus?

Tuesday 10th January 2017
As you may have heard Manchester City have recently signed a young player named Gabriel Jesus. The deal was sealed back in August but the transfer didn't go through until January. But just who is "Gabriel Fernando De Jesus"?

Gabriel Jesus was born in Sao Paolo in Brazil. Jesus signed a youth contract with Palmeiras back in 2013 after impressing scouts. An attacking forward, he can also play on the left wing. He is known to commit to tackles, dribble with the ball and cut inside. Jesus is also known for his pace and finishing ability. Within the first year, he impressed with 54 goals. Palmeiras then offered him a contract for three years.

In 2014 he impressed again with 37 goals in 22 games in the U17 Championship. He was called up to the main squad but remained unused on the bench. Supporters felt that he should have been playing, therefore, signing a "petition". By this time Gabriel Jesus was gaining much attention not just throughout the country but attracting scouts from major clubs across the globe.

Jesus made his senior debut at just the age of 17 in the first league game of the 2015 season. His first ever league goal was against Joinville Esporte Clube within the first minute of the game. He also scored the winner in the 3-2 victory. He went on in the season to play 20 games scoring 4 goals contributing to a 9th placed finish for Palmeiras.

In the opening fixture of the 2016 season, Jesus scored twice against Clube Atletico Paranaense. He went on to score another 10 goals for the season which contributed to Palmeiras winning their first League Title for 22 years. Jesus was then named as the player of the season.

Jesus was called up to the Brazil U20 squad for the 2015 world cup. He scored in a 4-2 win against Nigeria and scored in penalty shootouts aginst Portugal and Uruguay. Jesus featured in the final but Brazil ended up losing to Serbia 2-1 in extra time.
Gabriel Jesus featured in the 2016 Rio Olympics Brazilian national side. He scored against Denmark in a 4-0 win and scored twice aginst Honduras in the semi-final. Brazil went on to win 5-4 on penalties against Germany in the final meaning that Jesus earned an Olympic gold medal contributing his 3 goals.

Jesus made his international debut with the senior team against Ecuador on 1st September 2016. He even scored with an impressive display. After that, he scored against Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru. With 6 appearances for Brazil, Jesus has scored 4 goals.

Manchester City put in an offer of £27M and add-ons. For Palmeiras, this was an offer they couldn't refuse. The deal was already in talks in August 2016 but was finalised by January 2017.

So what plans do Man City have for Gabriel Jesus? Will he be slowly brought into the squad throughout the season? With being a big transfer at such a young age will he be able to adapt to the Premier League? At the age of 19, this "wonder kid" has a bright future ahead.

What do you think? Will Gabriel Jesus be another superstar flop or could he be the next "Neymar"?

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
