Manchester United Vs RSC Anderlecht Preview

Thursday 20th April 2017
Thursday night will see Manchester United face up against Belgian side, RSC Anderlecht in the Europa League Cup. The competition has been narrowed down to the last eight.

Other Europa League quarter-final games tonight include Belgian side KRC Genk vs tenth placed La Liga side, Celta De Vigo. German Side Schalke '04 face up against Deutsch title contenders Ajax. Also, Turkish side Besiktas will host French outfit, Lyon.

The first leg took place at the Stade Constant Vande Stock in Brussels. The fixture finished 1-1 with goals from Manchester United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan and a late goal from Anderlecht's Leander Dendoncker.
The reversed fixture tonight will, of course, be played at Old Trafford. Also known as the theatre of dreams. The Red devils will be coming off the back of a 2-0 victory over Premier league leaders Chelsea. Anderlecht will also be entering the fixture on a high after beating KV Oostende 1-0 in the Belgium Pro League.

Jose Mourinho has stated saying that Sergio Romero will be in goal for United this evening. Wayne Rooney could also be back on the bench as well. There are no new injury worries for Manchester United but also no recoveries. Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are still out injured.

Anderlecht have no new injury worries either and will be relying on players such as Youri Tielemans, Leander Dendoncker and Lukasz Teodorczyk. The Polish forward has 20 goals in the Belgian Pro League so far this season.

Manchester United will be relying on players like Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Antonio Valencia. With a great European record, you would put your money on United to win this tie but don't be so sure as Anderlecht also have quality too.

In the group stages, Man United advanced from Group A in second place winning 4 of their 6 games. Anderlecht were runners-up of Group C winning three, drawing two and losing just one game.

In the final 32, Manchester United were up against French side, St Etienne. They managed to win the home leg 3-0 and the away leg 1-0 to advance through. In the last 16, they met Russian side Rostov FC. The away leg ended up being a 1-1 draw but the reversed fixture at Old Trafford ended up with a 1-0 victory. The only goal coming from Juan Mata.
Anderlecht faced up against Russian side Zenit St Petersburg in the final 32. The home fixture was a 2-0 win but the away game ended up being 3-1. The away goal from Isaac Thelin in the 90th minute secured Anderlecht's place in the last 16. The next game was up against shock opponents, Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia. Both ties were won 1-0 comfortably to advance through to the last eight.

This now leads us to the returning fixture at Old Trafford. Many will bet on Man Utd to win. As some people would say in football "you would bet your house on it". Anderlecht could prove some pundits wrong as many football fans will not realise how underrated a side they are. They have some great young talent that some people believe could be playing for major European clubs in the near future.

This match will definitely be one to watch as we could even see an upset on the cards.

For my sins, I'm a season ticket holder at Stoke City, I have been proud to watch them for over 20 years. I follow most of the UK leagues and the major European ones too, and I've been told that I talk way too much about football.
