Match Report: Bordeaux 1-0 Lyon

Monday 20th February 2012
Lyon slipped further away from the Champions League places after a 1-0 loss to Bordeaux in Ligue one on Sunday at the Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas

Yoan Gouffran scored the only goal of the game to give the home side the win, who now sits only three points behind Lyon in ninth.

The pressure continues to grow on manager Rémi Garde as his side now have to go and play table toppers PSG in their next league game.

The game started slowly with neither team wanting to risk going behind. Lyon had the first opportunity to take the lead as Bafetimbi Gomis was played in by Bastos but didn't threaten with his shot which was easily saved by Cedric Carrasso.

An unmarked Michael Ciani then should have give Bordeaux the lead but his header from a set piece didn't trouble Hugo Lloris as it sailed wide.

Bordeaux continued to contain Lyon before taking the lead just before half time. Nicolas Maurice-Belay then surged down the right taking the ball into the box were Bordeaux claimed for a penalty as he was brought down, however the ball was cleared for the corner and the referee Hervé Piccirillo waved play on.

The home side made the most of the corner as Gouffran found he was unmarked at the back post and was allowed to header in the flicked on corner. Lyon then nearly equalized straight away but Kim Källström was given offside in the buildup.

Lyon brought on Jimmy Briand and Lisandro Lopez but still they didn't really cause Bordeaux any trouble throughout much of the second half. Bordeaux continued to cause problems but couldn't capitalize on a number of chances.

Ludovic Obraniak had two great chances; both provided by Benoit Tremoulinas, the first flew over the bar and the second Obraniak failed to connect with. Michael Ciani then wasted another opportunity as he put his header from Obraniak over the bar.

Jimmy Briand was then pulled back in the Bordeaux penalty box but the penalty wasn't awarded after strong appeals from the Lyon players. Lyon had a few half chances late on, Briand's shot was easily collected by Carrasso. The keeper then had to be sharp to stop Ciani turning into his own net.

Bordeaux hung on for a well deserved win and now give themselves a chance of European football next season.
