Match Report: Lyon 1-0 Apoel Nicosia (Lyon Fan's Perspective)

Wednesday 15th February 2012
Lyon had to be patient to beat Apoel Nicosia 1-0 at the Stade de Gerland to take the advantage in the Champions League quarter final.

Alexandre Lacazette gave the home side the lead with his shot that took a deflection of Paulo Jorge in a tie which they dominated throughout.

The visitors' tactics were defensive from the start and it wasn't until the last 10 minutes when Apoel finally had a shot, and showed any ambition in going forward.

It was Lyon who dominated the whole of the first half but they struggled to break down a solid Apoel Nicosia who in their usual fashion set up to stop Lyon while trying to hit them on the counter attack. This limited the home side's chances as they were forced to be patient.

Lyon had an early penalty shout turned down. Ederson made a good run into the box and was about to connect with a Michel Bastos pass but was blocked of the ball by Nuno Morais who didn't win the ball either.

Lisandro Lopez was a constant menace for Lyon but constantly found himself surrounded by the yellow shirts of Apoel. He did well with a one-two before being fouled on the edge of the box. Kim Källström took the resulting free-kick but wasted it as he smashed it into the wall.

Panic then struck in the box of Apoel Nicosia as they failed to clear their lines. Lopez then wriggled free from his marker, and he then went down under a challenge which the referee dismissed. The loose ball fell to Anthony Réveillère whose shot was blocked towards Bastos but he couldn't control the follow up and fired over.

Lacazette had a couple of chances to give his team the lead. The first came after he sped past the two Apoel Nicosia centre-backs but he blasted the ball high over the bar. He then forced a great save from Dionissis Chiotis after a mistake at the back from Apoel Nicosia allowed him to whip a curling shot with pace towards goal.

Lyon came out for the second half full of energy and would have taken the lead had it not been for Jorge's goal line clearance. Bastos played in Ederson who went round the keeper, only to see it cleared off the line by a last ditch slide.

Lacazette did finally find the back of the net, Cris stepped out of defence and played in Lacazette down the left who cut in and shot. But it was the misfortune of Jorge who couldn't get out of the way and it dipped into the visitor's goal due to a heavy deflection.

The last ten minutes were tense as Apoel Nicosia came into the game but with only one shot on goal, never really looked like scoring.
