Match Report: Lyon 1-2 Caen

Sunday 12th February 2012
Lyon's bid for a Champions League spot in Ligue 1 took a major dent on Saturday as they lost 2-1 to relegation contenders Caen at the Stade de Gerland. Romain Hamouma gave the visitors the lead as he latched onto a ball over the top and beat the stranded Hugo Lloris. Caen then doubled the advantage in the second half as Livio Nabab scored a spectacular volley from the edge of the box.

Lyon did pull one back, a penalty which was converted by Lisandro Lopez with only five minutes remaining, Lyon pushed for the equaliser but the visitors held on. Kim Källström was suspended for the game so Maxime Gonalons was called into the midfield with Yoann Gourcuff having to be content with a place on the bench.

Clément Grenier had the first chance of the game as he deflected Lisandro Lopez's free kick just over the bar before poor defending from Lyon allowed the visitors to take the lead. A swift counter attack by Caen allowed Hamouma to burst down the right to collect the through ball and as he raced down on goal Lloris hesitated allowing the French winger to fire into Lloris back post.

Pierre-Alain Frau then charged at the Lyon defence and his long range effort had to be punched over the bar by Lloris who reacted well. Bafétimbi Gomis then volleyed over just before half time as a lack luster Lyon failed to impose themselves on the game.

Gomis then should have equalized for his team as his header from Anthony Réveillère's cross sailed agonizingly wide from only six yards out. However the striker made amends when he cleared off the line at the other end from a Hamouma free kick. The home side looked out of ideas and struggled to break down a well organized Caen team who were content with playing on the counter attack.

Lyons defence was then caught out again as Benjamin Nivet carried the ball down the right, he was then allowed to square it to Livio Nabab who on the edge of the box chipped it up before volleying into the top corner giving Lloris no chance. Remi Garde chucked on Alex Lacazette and Ederson in hope that they would make something happen, leaving Gourcuff on the bench.

Lacazette was then brought down in the box by Aurelien Montaroup to earn a penalty with only four minutes remaining. Lopez converted the spot kick low to Alexis Thebaux's right but it was too little too late for Lyon who couldn't force an equaliser.
