Match Report: Lyon 2-1 FC Sochaux

Sunday 25th March 2012
Lyon extended their winning run to four games as they beat FC Sochaux 2-1 at the Stade de Gerland on Saturday evening.

Dejan Lovren gave the hosts the early lead but some sloppy play from Lyon nearly allowed Sochaux back into the game. Bafetimbi Gomis then doubled Lyon's lead before Modibo Maiga pulled one back to complete the scoring.

There were only three minutes on the clock when the home side took the lead. Kim Källström whipped in a free-kick for Lovren to header past keeper Teddy Richert. It was poor defending from Loïc Poujol who allowed the Croatian to get goal side and score with a free header.

A mistake from Clément Grenier then gifted the visitors a chance. The Frenchman's attempted back header was intercepted by Marvin Martin, who with a smart touch lifted the ball into the path of Edouard Butin. The striker took one touch before being clattered by the on rushing Hugo Lloris.

Despite the heavy contact the keeper did win the ball and the referee Hervé Piccirillo felt the challenge was fair. Unfortunately for Butin the collision spelt the end of his game and he had to be stretchered off, to be replaced by Maiga.

Panic then struck in the Lyon defence, as Anthony Réveillère attempted a pass back to Lloris but the keeper missed the ball and fortunately for him the ball ran too wide for Maiga to take advantage.

Michel Fernandes Bastos and Réveillère then tried to work the ball out from the back but managed to give the ball back to Sochaux and had to thank Lloris for making a fine save from Ryad Boudebouz, whose shot was curling in.

Despite the constant pressure from the visitors, Lisandro Lopez could have doubled Lyon's lead. Réveillère, looking to make amends for his mistakes, charged down the right and delivered a cross which was flicked on by Bastos. Lopez then only needed to guide his header back across goal but instead blazed over.

Another mistake then allowed Sochaux to counter with Lloris having to come to the rescue again. It was just as well as the linesman appeared to miss an offside in the build-up.

Both teams then nearly scored before half-time. Bastos worked the ball into the box beating David Sauget but his shot was thwarted by Boudebouz, while Martin struck the bar from 30 yards with a curling effort that Lloris somehow tipped onto the bar.

Lopez then had another chance to score from a Mouhamadou Dabo cross from the left, but the Argentinean failed to hit the target with his volley.

Lyon did eventually double their lead, perhaps against the run of play. Réveillère played in Gomis who after a perfectly timed run chipped the ball over Boudebouz to score.

The visitors responded and managed to find themselves a goal through the substitute Maiga. The striker rounded Lloris and coolly finished.

That was how it stayed for the rest of the game and despite Sochaux asserting plenty of pressure it was Lyon who stayed defensively solid and held out for the three points.

Lyon now sit in fourth place four points behind Lille, while Sochaux sit dangerously in nineteenth.
