Matchday 23 - Premier League Predictions 31/01/12

Wednesday 1st February 2012
I was surprised to see that the Transfer Window still closed tonight and was not pushed back to the 2nd. I feel for the backroom staff at the clubs, having to do last minute transfer dealings on a match day must be a nightmare. Anyway, let's all forget about the rumours and "insider info" for a bit and focus on what we are all here for, the football.

Swansea 1-0 Chelsea

What worries me about making this prediction is that I didn't see it as much of a shock. Everyone knows what Swansea can do and I think being brought back down to ground by losing at Sunderland will help to take some of the growing expectation off them. They rarely concede at home and the goals have hardly been free-flowing for Chelsea. Their last league result that I would consider impressive was the win against City, almost 2 months ago. I know AVB can turn this team into the best side in the league, I just wonder if he will last long enough to get the chance to.

Tottenham 2-1 Wigan

The Spurs train has slowed recently with two league games without a win. They should bounce back here. Wigan are yet to collect a point in 2012 and haven't won since 10th December. They are now 4 points from the safety line and this might increase at the end of this round of games. The only bright spot for Wigan in this match is the hope that Spurs are as poor as they were at Watford. They played a very strong side and probably should have lost the game. If Wigan can get into them the same way Watford did than they might stand a slight chance.

Wolves 1-2 Liverpool

I wanted to say this game would be a draw but I couldn't do it. I think Wolves have a good chance if Liverpool come into this game over confident after their cup exploits but personally I think Liverpool will be more disciplined than that. A break at the weekend for Wolves was probably much needed after two derby defeats at home in the space of a couple of days. If they have not recovered from it however, Liverpool could score a couple of early games and end the game before Wolves can get going.

Everton 1-3 Man City

With the lack of financial clout at Everton, the signings they have made and are trying to make have seemed a bit odd. The players being linked would look at home in a team battling relegation but not one attempting to finish 10th at the lowest. But then again, Moyes has worked miracles before so I will trust he knows what he is doing. No matter how good the likes of Gibson and (maybe) Jelavic are, City would win this game comfortably even if it was after the window had closed. Therefore, I'm predicting all three points will go back to the Etihad.

Man Utd 1-0 Stoke

I've heard De Gea will be playing tonight and I think he will keep a clean sheet. He has been taking a lot of stick (justly) but he is a good keeper. That being said, I think the low scoreline will be down to the defence keeping Stoke at bay more. This one was a draw at the Britannia and I predict a similar sort of game but with United just edging it as the home side.
Aston Villa 1-1 QPR

I was impressed in the way Villa won at Wolves. Robbie Keane looks like being a big player for them so it's a shame he won't be there for the rest of the season. For QPR, Cisse could have a similar impact. I think his experience will be more important than his ability (which I still think is pretty high). As with QPR's other signings, it is a massive gamble as I'm guessing his wages will be quite hefty and they are not guaranteed survival. I don't think either side will have the edge but it might be quite an entertaining draw.

Blackburn 2-1 Newcastle

Blackburn are actually in some sort of form at the moment. They have managed to get 7 points from a possible 12 and I think they will get another 3 tomorrow night, 1 at the least. Senegal's abyssal show at the Cup of Nations has meant Newcastle's two Senegalese players will be back sooner than expected but still not soon enough for this match. It will be close but Blackburn's willpower should be enough to triumph.

Bolton 1-2 Arsenal

Like Blackburn, Bolton have also managed 7 points in four matches to make them look capable of survival. Unlike Blackburn, I don't see them winning during mid-week. Arsenal on the other hand, have not picked up a point in the new year, a feat equalled by Wigan. They need to win at the Reebok if they want to stand any chance of finishing fourth. I think they will win this game but I still don't think they will make it into the Champions League, unless they win it.

Fulham 1-1 West Brom

Two very inconsistent teams who are a lot closer to the relegation zone than they probably should be. There will be goals in this game but I am not totally sure where they will go. As always, when I'm not certain, a draw it is.

Sunderland 2-1 Norwich

This is another game that I think could go either way. With O'Neill in charge though, I just can't see Sunderland losing at home to a mid-table team. While writing that, it sounded like an insult to Norwich but it is one of the biggest compliments you can pay them right now.

I predicted plenty of goals last weekend, and we got them. So once again, there will be lots and lots of goals. I'll be back at the weekend with some more predictions and a quick look at the big deals of deadline day.
