Meet Sergej Milinković-Savić, the future star everyone is talking about
There seems to be a new era of talented players taking Europe by storm. Even though names such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Eden Hazard continue to dominate front pages and transfer rumours, there are other players that are talented enough to become world-class players in the near future. This time, we will talk about midfielders that fall in that bracket.
We have witnessed the growth of players such as Casemiro, Mateo Kovacic, and Leon Goretzka in recent years. Others such as Julian Weigl and Renato Sanches are loaded with potential, but have not hit their best form yet. But there is one particular player who is thriving in the Serie A in Italy, and is about to become one of best attacking midfielders in the entire UEFA region.
We are talking about Sergej Milinković-Savić. Perhaps you have never heard about him, and that is fine. After all, the Lazio star and Serbia international is not exactly a household, worldwide known player. But there is no question he will become one sooner than later. Most experts believe the Serbian star is ready to jump to a more competitive league - or maybe a better team in the same league - and he has been constantly mentioned in transfer rumours. In fact, Manchester United, Juventus, and Chelsea have all been linked with him. PSG went ahead of the curve and there was a report that the Ligue 1 giants were preparing a €170 million bid for his services, although that never became a reality.
But who is this player everyone seems to love? Because to be honest, he came out of nowhere to become a talented, filled-with-potential playmaker tipped to become the next best thing. His growth over the past 12 months has been absolutely impressive and, if his recent performances are of any indication, then we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg. He has lots of years left before even getting closer to his prime, and make no mistake here. We are about to witness a quality playmaker who is talented enough to become one of the best players in the world sooner than later.
Milinkovic-Savić has been featuring on several roles Lazio during the current season. Considering the team employs a 3-4-2-1 system - although at times it is a 3-5-1-1 tactic - the Serbian has been deployed as a central midfielder, a role that plays quite well for his strengths. As a towering presence in midfield who can both defend and attack with equal ease, he seems better suited to play as a central midfielder. He has been compared to Nemanja Matic at times, although the Lazio star is far more adept going forward and threatening the opposing defences. That is why at times he has been playing as an attacking midfielder behind the likes of Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto.
It must be noted that Milinkovic-Savić still has a lot of areas where he can improve, but there is a reason why teams such as United and PSG posed their eyes on him. And unless something drastic happens, he could very well become one of the best midfielders in Europe quite soon. The talent is clearly there.
