Mesut Ozil has no place in Manchester United team

Thursday 12th October 2017
Although summer transfer window closed six weeks ago, clubs are still looking to identify, scout and work towards signing their target players. Manchester United are keen on adding Mesut Ozil in January; however, the Arsenal midfielder wouldn't fit Jose Mourinho's team.
It is no surprise that transfer rumours are already making waves in the media. One of them centres around Mesut Ozil, a player constantly linked with a move away from the Emirates over past two seasons. The longer his contract saga drags on, the scrutiny surrounding his Arsenal future will intensify.

The German playmaker, who has less than a year left on his current deal, has simply refused to put pen to papers on a new contract, with the Gunners chief also refusing to yield to his £300,000-per-week wage demand. While his contract issues linger, Ozil's performance this season has been far from commendable.

A situation that prompted Arsenal legend, Martin Keown to suggest the midfielder has “mentally left the club”, as Ozil's recent displays have failed to showcase his considerable talent.

The former Schalke man's future hangs in the balance. As does another of Arsenal's key players: Alexis Sanchez. If both leave the Emirates Stadium in near future, it proves that the Gunners are now unable to keep their biggest assets.

Back on point - Ozil is heavily linked with a move to Man United, with Mourinho also speaking highly of his former player. So, when would this transfer take place? And would the German add anything to the Red Devils?

Signing Ozil in the winter transfer window, although improbable, would cost less than what Arsenal paid Real Madrid in 2013 (£42.5m). However, United could snatch the midfielder for free next summer.
During their spell together in Madrid, Ozil was an integral member of Mourinho's side. But times have changed. The Portuguese manager has every department covered at United and his team are flourishing this season. Where would Ozil fit in?

United fans expect their new signings to make an instant impact. Robin van Persie ticked that box when his goals helped guide the club to Premier League glory in 2012/13. Ozil is unlikely to replicate the Dutch striker's performances during his debut season at Old Trafford.

Ozil is, of course, a good player. He can also be a match-winner. However, those traits don't come to the fore often enough. Instead, the playmaker's qualities are usually overshadowed by his lacklustre attitude on the pitch. It wouldn't be deemed acceptable at Man United. Mourinho expects his players to show full commitment in every game.

Also, who would the United manager sacrifice to accommodate Ozil? Anthony Martial, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata, and Marcus Rashford are all crucial to challenging for trophies this season. As are deeper lying midfielders, Nemanja Matic and Marouane Fellaini.

During big games, Ozil is often anonymous. The 28-year-old refuses to do the dirty work, similar to what Matic and Fellaini are renowned for. With Mourinho paying particular interest to that aspect of his midfielders' game, it's difficult to imagine Ozil lining up for Man United anytime soon.

Clubs sign players to add more depth to the squad - Mesut Ozil would add nothing new to bolster Manchester United.

I like to think of myself as an easy going lover of all things football, however, I do class myself as a die-hard Arsenal fan but I'm not biased enough to view life at the Emirates through rose-tinted spectacles and can appreciate when we are beaten by the better team on the day.
